Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Aroma: dark caramel malt aroma with a touch of sweetness, lots of roasted and coffee comes in to take over the initial sweetness,

Brownish body with a thin ring of white bubbles around the edge of the glass. Aroma of coffee, malts, some smoke. Flavors of coffee, caramel, dark bread, and a lingering bitterness

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a very hazy dark brown colored body and a poor lacing. The mild aroma was malty coffee and funky. The semi-thick mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of hops roasted malt dark malt and coffee. A decent one that I would consider buying again.

Pours a clear, reddish brown with a thin and quickly fading tan head. Nose is dominated by the coffee, as is the flavor. Despite being somewhat one dimensional, this isn’t a bad beer at all. I’d describe it as having a more pure coffee taste than you might get out of the many stouts that feature coffee flavors. And, in that respect, it’s tasty and interesting. This might make for a suitable alternative to an imperial or sweet stout...if you wanted something a bit lighter.

Pour is a dark red with no head. Aroma is some dark fruit with a bit of the coffee followed by some chocolate. Flavor is again some chocolate at first then comes some dark fruit then a small touch of the coffee. There are lots of things going on in this beer and each sip brings something different.

12oz - Aroma is different than I expected, leather, dank coffee, toffee and burnt malts. Pours dark ruby with a small head and great lacing. Flavor is burnt coffee with a mean aftertaste. Palate is dry and sticky. Not so good.

Bottle (12oz) shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a very deep ruby with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma’s malty, a bit nutty along with some toffee and light herbal hops. Flavour’s malty with coffee, a touch of smoke, toffee and light bitter finish. Average bodied. Pretty good.
