Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Pours a lightly hazy, dark caramel brown color. A small, foamy, khaki colored head settles to a thin, swirly film with a prominent edge. Minimal, spotty lacing noted. The aroma is simple but inviting, with big, roasty coffee notes showing atop a lightly smoked caramel malt base. A touch of cream is present as well, adding smoothness. The flavor is really well balanced, with the lightly sweet, toasty malts being perfectly complimented by roasty coffee and spicy, earthy hops. Its not all that complex, but man is it tasty and easy to drink. Smooth, medium-plus body with a creamy palate. Lingering coffee roast on the finish. Damn good brew.

12 ounce bottle from my Summer Secret Santa. Pours a hazy, murky looking orange-brown color with a thin head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich coffee, coffee grounds, caramel, cinnamon. Taste is bitter, rich roasted coffee, caramel, cinnamon and a slight leafy/vegetal note. Medium bodied. Good beer.

12oz bottle. Deep stained-glass reddish-brown color. Thin beige head. The coffee is quite pronounced in the aroma, without the typical chocolate roastiness of an Imperial Stout or Porter. Big coffee flavor, quite a smooth and enjoyable, coalesces well with the smooth, rich lager tones. Not much hop character, most of the bitterness comes from the coffee, which pretty much dominates every aspect of this beer. Quite excellent nonetheless, one of the better coffee beers out there.

Pours a very light looking coffee color. Aroma smells like coffee, too. Add some ice and I may have a iced perkulator coffee doppelbock. Or better yet blend it with some ice for a perkulator frappacino. I digress. Flavor profile is mostly coffee and body is very light. There was no head. Overall I liked this beer probably because I really like beer and coffee. If you fall into this category you’ll probably like this beer, too.

I am surprised that I actually like this. Its got a pretty strong coffee taste that is impossible to not be overwhelming. It really does taste like an iced coffee with carbonation. Its a little better then the coffee bender, and I think thats because it starts with a stronger base beer.

TAP: opaque brown/red pour with noticeable sediment, offwhite head that is thin but foamy around the edges of the glass, and laces pretty well. Aroma of coffee grounds. Taste is all coffee, with a body that’s heavier than Furthermore Oscura but lighter than Surly Coffee Bender. Fairly carbonated. Really good stuff.
