Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Tap at the Happy Gnome. Appearance was peculiar... like coffee poured into dirty dishwater, thin white head. Aroma was that of coffee grounds, like the stuff left when you pull the filter out of the coffee maker. Slightly sweet, heavy coffee flavor. Palate is sweet turning into bitter. Very solid option if you like coffee beers.

Dark brown color with a medium head. Aroma of freshly ground coffee. A little bitter upfront, more from coffee than hops. Plenty of coffee in this one. The sweet malt blends pretty well with it.

12 oz bottle, pours a clear brown with a light beige head. aroma of mostly coffee but some bock-like elements as well - sweet malt and clean germanic yeast characteristics as well. malty flavor, balanced profile of coffee, chocolate, dark raspberry, very reminiscent of a coffee porter. not thick, but not thin, with a lightly noticeable alcohol element. an enjoyable beer.

12 oz. into Duvel tulip. I couldn’t not buy this when I saw it in the store. I’m always up for new flavors in beer, and I’ve never seen a coffee doppelbock. Deep shining ruby in the glass with creamy tan head; looks like a Fuller’s vintage. Used coffee ground aroma over powdery cracker malts. Some nice arching foam lace and relatively deep and slow racing. Mmmm, tasty; the crackery and nicely sweet malts provide a great floor for the light roasty coffee to play on top as just more than an accent. The combination has a vaguely milk chocolate flavor as well, probably just an unintended effect of the roast mixing with the sweetness (but a nice integrator). I was afraid the coffee would stick out like a thin sore thumb, but it doesn’t -- it melds very well with the overall flavor profile. Just a bit too powerful in the alcohol department to be mistaken for a session beer, but the softness of the flavor makes this seem very quaffable. Despite medium body, this is light on the palate. I like it.

Bottle: The aroma is a nice combination of coffee and chocolate with some faint toffee and fruit. It pours a transparent reddish-brown with a minimal beige film for a head that quickly fades to a very thin ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor has moderate coffee throughout that blends with some light chocolate, caramel, and a faint sour fruitiness in the finish. Pretty tastey, but the coffee additions pretty much turn this into a porter...at least flavor-wise. The doppelbock character is mostly hidden behind the coffee. Medium bodied with a slightly syrupy and sticky mouthfeel.

Thanks MikeTD. Dark mahogany pour, medium white head that stays and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is coffee and more straight coffee beans. Flavor is coffee beans upfront, really roasty tasting with a touch of caramel in the background and some munich malt. This is a coffee beer and it really overides everything but I like it in a different style of beer and not just an aggressive stout, it really works for this beer. Medium bodied which could be fuller with a cloying sweetness in the finish. Really is a nice coffe brew, just straight beans.

dark coffee color , some tan bubbles that quickly disappear. aroma is of stromg coffee, with hints of malt. flavor is sweetened coffee, caramel, roasty malt. medium bodied, creamy mouth-feel, lightly bitter finish. the bitterness of the coffee offsets the sweetness of the malt nicely. a pleasant surprise to me. my good buddy cornfield provided the bottle. another of my good buddies designed the label.

12 zo bottle: It’s been a while since I rated a beer so here I go. Aroma has a really nice ground coffee scent to it. roasted malt characteristics, and some caramel aroma’s as well. Pours a very cloudy brownish/black almost like coffee with a small off tan head that didsipates into nothing after about a minute. Taste is coffee of course, nice roasted malt characteristic, soemwhat nutty, caramel, and light sticky on the tongue. Palate is very lgihtly carbonated with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Overall, I like coffee so this is right up my alley. The doppelbock characteristics do get drowned out slightly by the coffee, but I like it all this same. Cheers!
