Commercial Description:
This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

Mild nose of coffee beans, dark malt. Really well balanced, good beer. Full flavored, malt, light coffee, cocoa, toffee. Bitter, coffee lingering on my palate.

A pretty dark brown pour with an off white head. Aroma is mostly coffee with a bit of malt and nut. Flavor, is actually not that different than the aroma. There is not much dopplebock in this one. Roasty coffee accented with some toffee and a hint of mocha. Rather lively carbonation. Just the faintest bit of fuit/lager type flavor in the through. It is a bit light, but is very drinkable, and a lot of flavor compared to most beers this drinkable. Certainly unique, this is the type of brew that isn’t going to have too many people in between on.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of fresh, bitter coffee, and a hint of caramel. Poured very deep amber/copper/brown in color with a very small, tan head that lasted around the edges only. Cloudy. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of fresh, bitter coffee, and slight caramel. Medium body. Slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Fresh, bitter coffee finish. Not much of a Doppelbock. 7.5%ABV is hidden.

Wow, lots of jalapeno and bitterness. Sour and sharp. Not really reminds me off coffee. Cold and dead on the tongue. Other oat and feedbag malts. Some hops rounding the end. Pretty good, but I’m not sure I would actually get this again. The initial taste was really off putting. Once that first sip is done, it does get better. I’d suggest letting this warm up.

A murky brown color with a small beige head. The aroma contains some caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and chocolate. The flavor contains alot of caramel along with some toffee, chocolate, and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is rather syrupy with a sweet finish. Overall a pretty good beer.

Coffee didn’t come blowing through in the aroma, more of a slight roast malt, and right at the end a touch of coffee bean, taste was that a mildy sweetened coffee that had a very satisfying non bitter finish, taste and felt more like an ale then a bock, smooth palate enjoyable
