Pours an oily black that allows zero light and I fucking loved it. Coaxed a thin dark chestnut brown head. The nose is rich, molasses, sweet, very mild soy sauce, portish character, dark cherry skins, coffee, mild roast. The flavor is rich, chocolate/coffee, molasses, nice dry bitterness, roasty, warming. Very velvety smooth/full mouthfeel with a warming finish. Loved it. rabba9 (71), Chaska, Minnesota, USA

Aroma is of chocolate and coffee. Tastes of dark roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. Very smooth yet huge body, this one lingers with a malt taste on the tongue. I describe this beer to others as drinking motor oil, although I can’t speak to that from experience. Excellent Imperial Stout, my only wish would be for some bitterness to balance the sweetness of the malts and that it is so complex its a lot to down one 12 oz bottle. Good stuff though cgarvieuk (4208), Edinburgh, Scotland

Deep black ... good roast malts ... little coffee nose ... deep solid smooth roast ... lots of deep soft fruit malts ... little chocolate. bikesandbeers (468), Los Angeles, California, USA

Flavor is nicely choclate with good roasty notes. Finishes smooth and fairly light for a Impy. Some alchol warming, but not overpowing. Lacks complexity, but increbily smooth for such a big beer. gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 3, 2009 Used motor oil black with a deep brown head. Dark, smoky, sweet malt aroma. Coffee and dark chocolate with a strong hop bitterness and lingering roasty chocolate aftertaste. Alcohol presence actually feels fairly light for the ABV (though it’s clearly there). Very tasty, could be a bit more complex. beernbourbon (304), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2009 Pours black with thin brown head that does not stick around very long. Aroma is roasted malt and coffee, really not smelling much more. Flavor is a little bitter, roasted malt, sweetness comes later, coffee, some chocolate notes. Finish is smoother than expected. Not as much complexity as I would like. A little alcohol burn but hides 12% well. Cornfield (4966), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 1, 2009 Bottle from United (Cardinal) Liquors in Frankfort, Illinois: This pours an opaque, intensely dark mahogany body with a brown film - then skinny ring - then nothing for a head. No lace. The aroma is dark, sweet roasted malt, bakers chocolate, and a rooty earthiness. The flavor sees the addition of some vanilla, bitter coffee, and lots of alcohol. It finishes sticky sweet with an earthy bitterness and a steady alcohol burn. Pretty good. markwise (1187), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA
