Mrthirstyneck (339), Minnesota, USA Jan 28, 2008 Ok, first off, It looks eerily similar to darkness from surly. thats as far as i’ll go with that though. The aroma is Delicious, superbly roasted and toasted malts give off immense flavor and smell. The initial sip is slightly sweet but very quickly translates into a ultra deep roast, almost Burnt. Hints of chocolate, but mostly heavily roasted coffee and burnt wood. As for the finish it’s slightly sweet on the tip of the palate nicely balanced towards to middle, and as if finds the way back it becomes burnt and toasty. Finishes quite dry with coffee and burnt wood. Great beer overall. The only negative may be a thin mouthfeel. Nice work Dark! P.S. drank at nearly room temp.
durhambeer (546), Durham, USA Oct 15, 2008 Thanks to Jason for bringing this to a tasting and leaving it! Black pour with quickly receding tan/yellow head. Roasty, roasty, roasty aromas with tons of malt but some hop notes as well. On the nose and palate, roasted barley, chocolate malt, molasses, some coffee bitterness, hops, and toasted hazelnuts. Damn, this is good. lordeche (336), Bridgewater, Massachusetts, USA Oct 9, 2008 Pours thick black with brown head. Tons of chocolate and roasted notes in the nose, a good amount of coffee, and a bit of alcohol astringency. Lots of coffee, chocolate, and roasted notes in the flavor, some slight dark fruit and bitter hop is also present. One of the more flavorful porters I’ve had and also one of the best. bellmyer (15), EAST MOLINE, Illinois, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours dark black with a brown head that recedes quickly. Aroma of coffee and roasted chocolate. Taste is very coffee with some roasted flavors. Light lacing. Solid stout. EHopper (148), Minnesota, USA Sep 21, 2008 The aroma of this beer was all coffee. Anything thing else seemed roasted to the point where it too smelled like coffee. The not surprising coffee flavor, while not overly complex, was very drinkable with some sweetness, some bite, some hoppy dryness, and lingering dark flavors of deep forest fruits. esjaygee (830), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Sep 20, 2008 On Tap at the Great Lakes Brewfest. Brown to black with a frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, oatmeal and coffee. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and fruit. Smooth and tasty with a mild bitter finish. Yet another quality beer from the state of Michigan and Dark Horse brewery.
