Commercial Description:
Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart. So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

From a growler. Big, big, almost cloyingly sweet Tripel. Not a favorite in this style, but certainly is a party starter. Reasonable spice in this - just not enough to fight the sweetness. While very good, not "dry" enough like my favorite Tripels.

Pour is opaque golden with a thin white head...smell is yeasty and spicy with a sweet yeasty banana thing going on...lots of sweet banana flavors...faint peppery and perfumey thing toward the fnish...nice chewy mouthfeel with delicate carbonation...

Has a slight bittering taste to this. It’s not bad, they have done a pretty good job with this. Small citrus flavoring along with a hint of caramel taste. Has a small head at first but quickly disappears.

Another good one from Dark Horse, even if the style isn’t my favorite. Pours golden, and looks complex just from the appearance. Very wheaty, full of citrus and spice, yeast and cloves. Alcohol is strong, but not too noticeable. Too sticky and sweet, finishes almost like a fruit beer or cider. Actually reminds me of Gumballhead, just with more going on.

Sampled blind at "Better Know a Style: Abbey Tripel" tasting. Clear golden color with thicker off-white head. Orange, yeasty aroma, spice, sweet, very much instyle. Orange flavor with dough, yeast, red fruit, cloyingly sweet and spice. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Too sweet.

Bottle. Pours a dark hazy amber. Small white head, dissipates and leaves little islands. Some lacing is evident. Aroma of fruit, and yeast. First sip is fuits, some spice, and some alcohol. The feeling on the mouth is almost full, but not quite. The finish is a mild fruit, more of a spice and a heat and flavor of alcohol. Overall a pretty decent trappist style.
