Commercial Description:
Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart. So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

[Bottle] Pours cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma is strongly of yeast, malt, bread, and a little spice. Taste is spicy up front, then the yeast and malt come through. Medium mouthfeel. Good finish. A good beer--maybe a little underrated.

I couldn’t get over this raisiny bittersweetness that I always tend to find in Tripels. Yeast presence, alcohol fairly well covered, pretty sweet and heavy. Okay, but nothing I’d want to come back to.

Bottle from Friar Tuck in Savoy, IL. Pours a hazy pale orange with a white head. Aroma of belgian wheat malt, citrus, yeast, and bread. Initial flavor of pale belgian wheat malt and orange that transitions to flavors of yeast, clove, pepper, and must. Not much sweetness to counter things. Finish is dry, with lots of clovey phenols and notes of rubbing alcohol. Actually a respectable attempt at the style, but I am not a huge fan of Tripels.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a minimal white head. Unfiltered. Aroma of honey, flowers, fruit and yeast. Taste is sweet with a honey presence and an orange peel finish. Nice.

So I’m sittng in my yard while frankenkitty is sleeping. I’m reading and smoking and drinking. When I find myself ignoring the book to sniff the beer (and those of you that know me know that nothing distracts me from my book) I know this is something special. This is a gorgeous dark golden colored brew with an aroma of caramel, brandy, and something yummy I can’t quite name. It has a smooth palate with a thicker mouthfeel and a nice lingering after taste. I begin to see why it distracted me from the book. All in all, can’t wait till it’s available in Illinois.

Bottle. [Courtesy of Sk8viking, session @ Ølbaren] Small fizzy white head that mostly diminished. Clear flat looking body with a golden color. Spare lacework. Aroma of yeast, caramel, fruit, grain, brown sugar, citrus, spice. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderated sweet fruity flavor. Sweet fruity finish. Thanks again buddy!
