Commercial Description:
Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart. So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

This has a hazy dark straw body with a miniscule fizzy head. The aroma is a blend of toffee, apricot, and sweet citrus juice. A mild floral bitterness and a light spiciness is added to the flavor. Not a bad brew.

6/07/2007: Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale pours an opaque, deep gold color with some sediment suspended in it. There is a thin, frothy, off-white crown on top. The aroma is bready with some Belgian fruitiness, caramelized/roasted corn, and a nice sweetness. The sweet, caramelized malt and earthy fruitiness in the flavor are followed by some cigar smokiness and a mild bitterness in the finish. There is also some berry flavor in the mid-palate. No alcohol can be tasted at all. The body of this beer is medium and it is soft and very smooth on the palate. Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale has a nice depth to the aroma and flavor that is quite unique for a Tripel. This is a really complex and very tasty brew! I am quite impressed with this beer.

Bottle - purchased at Wacky’s party store next door to brewery. Light golden color. Small head with no lacing. Fruity aroma. There is some sweetness in the flavor, but wouldn’t call it fruity. More complex then my amatuer taste buds can describe. Don’t taste the alcohol, but the warming sensation reminds you of its strength. Overall nice smooth beer that I would recomend.

Bottled. Poured lightly hazy peach with a quickly-receding white head.. thin dusting remained. Aroma was sweet and engaging with a peppery edge to it.. sweet light fruit and yeasty notes accompanied.. quite nice. Flavor found sweet candied pears, cloves, and white pepper primarily.. well-blended with a medium-length spicy/sweet finish. Great balance between the spicy and sweet notes throughout.. medium-bodied. Good stuff.

Bottle. Sweet yeasty aroma with some hoppy funk, lightly fruity. Interesting variant! Highly carbonated body is a rich, clear golden with a short white head. Taste is too sweet - almost cloying, with a strong strain of Belgian yeast and biscuity malt topped by candis. Orange rind and pear, rum and light peach. Medium body is extremely creamy, enough to feel full. Alcohol is - against style - not at all noticeable. Could do with some dryness (it’s hard to finish a bottle at this level of sweetness), but it’s still one of my favorite tripels.

A very nice Belgian. Peach-gold in the glass - slight haze with smallish head. Very appealing. Fruity nose. Aroma of apricots, pears, a bit of cinnamon. A bit of heat up front then apricot nectar. A bit cloying.

Not much head. Golden color. Very fruity as it hits your tongue, but then the alcohol blast comes in. Kind of like a mixed vodka drink. Bought a six so I had a chance to try it in different weather conditions. Was very good on a very hot summer day in the back yard.
