Commercial Description:
Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart. So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

Light golden pour shows very active, almost fizzy carbonation while the 7-up like head erupts from the liquid more than anything else and is simply too active too last. Ridiculously heavy filtration rivals with any macro’s. The nose is jokingly loaded with coriander that dominates the spicy, americanised under-attenuating yeast strain. Residual sugars abound, letting a honeyed and floral spicy malt character lingering on the palate and artificially thickening the beer. Hard to drink at this level of sweetness, but the high carbonation level I guess could be an help if there was just more to put your teeth on. Simplistic esters battle it out with fuelic alcohol and sugar cane. Crazy how they fare so well with the dark ones and this comes across as a mouthful of coriander.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Third beer of our Dark Horse Brewing tasting. Pours a hazy dark yellow with a small diminishing white head. Aroma is yeasty with some apple and a light sugary sweetness. Flavour’s sweet, yeasty, fruity and very easy to drink. Couldn’t taste the alcohol much. Medium bodied. Pretty good, like a like session Belgian. 3 Dark Horse beers in a row, each one different from the last and each one quite good.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, my bottle, via Pintbypint. Poured cloudy orange-gold with a small creamy diminishing off-white head. Smells like yeasty apple crumble - apple, pear with light cinnamon and brown sugar malt. Taste was also sweet and yeasty, almost a little cloying - brown sugar malt, fruit, with some hop and yeast bitterness on the quick finish. Mouthfeel was sticky, lightly carbonated, average at best body - we found this very easy to drink, sort of like a cross between a Unibroue Ephemere and a middle-of-the-road tripel.

Draft - fairly large fruity aroma. Beautiful golden color with a white, white head. Overly sweet flavor. One dimensional to my palate. Eh.

On draft at Rich O’s for Gravity Head 2006. Golden with a slight white head. Yeasty w/ hints of citrus and malt. Nothing to write home about... but not at all bad.
