| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 19, 2008 2/19/2008: Scotty Karate Scotch Ale has a rich, chewy malty aroma that is loaded with caramel, fruits including cooked apple sauce and dates, and a hint of smoke! The appearance is like melted carmels. This beer looks thick and sticky and has a small but dense ivory head and tiny carbonation bubbles. The flavor is quite malty with lots of caramel malt, a nice level of smokiness, and a good bitterness that provides the balance. The body of this beer is medium-full and it is quite smooth. I really like the maltiness of this one as it is deep without being overly sweet. I also like the smoke that can be both subtle and elusive and is cleary from caramelizing the malt (traditional method) rather than adding peated malt. The alcohol is well-hidden and provides a nice warming sensation. Overall this is a really good Scotch Ale.
12 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 9.75%) through trade with buckybeer in December 2006. Thanks Mark! Rating #188 for this beer... drpimento (832), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA

Except for the initial quick flash of a weird flavor itsa superb scotch ale. Nice small head with good lace. Hazy dark brown almost opaque color. Peatish characteristics. Hints of booze. No hop. Estery malty finish. Rich body. Had this on tap at Bodega Brew Pub downtown La Crosse, Wis. after4ever (2773), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Feb 13, 2008 12-oz. Thanks, AllenDodd! Pours deep mahogany with caramel highlights and a thin, grayish rim of film. Has some sharp, almost buggy tart notes mixed in with a little bit of roast. Medium, fairly lifeless body. Roast, ash, caramel, and a huge burning alcohol bite on the mid-palate, with a long rubbing alcohol finish. I’m guessing this is not what the brewer intended, but we have another bottle to rate in the near future for comparison’s sake. DrnkMcDermott (1851), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 12, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Already traded one of my four-pack away, so I’d better stop hoardin’ and start enjoyin’. Pours a thick dark brown into my glass. No foam action at first, then a light stout-type layer develops. Smell is sweet at first, fully malty, and then a bit yeasty (bottle conditioned, I see) and builds a big note of smoke. First taste brings home the touch of Bamberg smoke. Well-laden with darker malts, thick but not too sweet. Complex and slightly amped hop load keep everything in check. I’d think storing this too long might let it get phenolic; better enjoy it this year rather than stash it away until your wife gets it in your divorce settlement (quoting Jack Black in "The Simpsons").
