As usual, they make even a style I don’t care for interesting. Scotty Karate is a nice turn on the scottish ale style. Pours amberish, with a thick head and good lacing. Aroma is thick with flowers, almost like a potourii. Hints of carmel and candy. Texture is very thick. The flavor, while good, is slightly bland when compared to how evident the alcohol is, and it leaves behind a sticky sweet aftertaste. Very candyish. This is one that I enjoyed, was glad I tried, but probably wouldn’t get again. jrob21 (1268), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Luckily the taste of this bad boy is a little more entertaining. Big malt flavors with a full body and slight chalky sort of texture. Aroma of strawberry and other red fruit. Almost a whiskey sort of oak aging aspect to this one. Getting some vanilla, nut, and wood. Pretty complex and one of the more entertaining scotch/scottish ales I’ve had. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 9, 2008 I absolutely love this scotch ale. Darkhorse knows how to make dark beers that are not porters or stouts. Lots of alcohol infused power driven by caramel and more caramel maltiness. Solid beer. jstraw (769), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 6, 2008 In bottle at Jerry’s. Mahogany with good, creamy beige head / Sweet, caramel and dark fruit nose / Full, thick, winey body with some chewy hops, long finish and big alcohol kick / Flavors of raisins, port, nuts, smoke, cloves, and orange peel / Close to a monster - smokey barleywine. jj21 (84), Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 4, 2008 Pours a very hazy murky brown color with some carbonation leading to a good, creamy tan head. Muted aromas of Caramel and sweet malts with hints of yeast. Disappointed at the subtlty of the aroma. Sweet caramel flavor with dark fruits and an extremely well balanced citrus hoppiness and roasted malts in the finish. Not an overly sweet Scottish with the hops balancing very well. This beer is so smooth to drink. The unexpected hoppiness leaves you wanting more.
