Flavor is smoke, apple, caramel, spices, chocolate, peat, coffee...hmmm. Finishes sweet tasty. Little carbonation. Very interesting and good. IlanMan (850), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 10, 2008 Real good scottish ale. High alcohol but fairly well hidden. Tastes of butter, carmel, malt, and alcohol. One of the better Scottish ales I have had. Would perhaps buy again. Definitely not bad and not too expensive either. ($7.99 for a 4-pack) Solid beer. prosqtor (408), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 7, 2008 From the bottle. Strong malty aroma had some peat in it too. I feel this may have rated even higher if I drank it from the tap. Strong alcohol and toffee and peat flavors meld in a very strong, yet drinkable Scotch Ale. ¾ (5009), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 6, 2008 A lot of woody, caramelized, old-aleish burnt, peaty, smoky malts in this one. Texture is a bit watery and cask-like (from the bottle), with some peaty but sweet tobacco and some woody old fruit tasted. Heavy presence of peaty malts and something resembling wood tannins rounds this one out. wmubronco1992 (191), Coldwater, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 5, 2008 Bottle, purchased from the mega beer store, Super Liquor II, in Coldwater, MI. Off white head, with some lacing. Brownish red color. Aroma is smokey and peat. Tastes of carmal and peat. Maybe just a little too sweet. Mouthfeel is very sweat and earthy. Very drinkable, hard to imagine that it is 9.75%. Didn’t feel the alcohol. Overall nice beer. Need to get up to the Dark horse to try on tap. troyc (1175), Lubbock, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2008 (Tap) Pours a very dark brown color, with a light colored head. Aroma of burnt caramel, peat, and alcohol. Notes of dark fruits, sweet chocolate, and alcohol in the taste. Very good body, with good balance as well. A very good scotch ale in my opinion. dsm (109), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 2, 2008 Draft at Ashley’s in Ann Arbor. Pours brown. It has a few spices and is smooth, but bland overall. Slightly sweet. There isn’t much to it. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Murky amber; bright orange glow lingering at the bottom. Damp, malty fruit aroma; crunchy candy sugars, peat, and peaches seared in bourbon and caramel. Crusty sweetness of peppermint, bubblegum, and creme brulee burns a brisk edge into the fruity forms, hinting late of some tart lactose sugar. Taste is simple and concretely organized; maple wood and syrup, leafy bitterness and apple peel, smoked chocolate malt and cherry pit. Dense; detailed. Fruity heaviness in acerbic raspberry juice, some banana, black cherry; made dirty with a type of natural mineral dusting that lends a rich, earthy moss bitterness but no unpleasant metallic twang. Smooth, wet and rustic palate with the lightest burn of alcohol; finishes dankly and lightly bitter with an aged hop and hot scotch dryness. Lucid, balanced, and agreeable; a pleasant scotch ale.
