| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 27, 2007 Sampled at 7/17/07 STL beer gathering. Pours clear mahogany / garnet with a small quickly diminishing head. The aroma has lots of sweet caramel malt, molasses, brown sugar, anise and cream. Medium / light body that is lush with sharp carbonation and finishes very thing - almost watery. The flavor starts with molasses, caramel, toasted toffee and tobacco. the finish adds sour fruitiness and some papery traits. The good points of the beer are very good, but the bad point detract this from being a great example of the style. jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 24, 2007 Updated: Oct 22, 2007Wasn’t that impressed. Perhaps I don’t like scotch ales. Tasted very sweet, a raisiny sort of sticky sugar sweetness. Alcohol is there, but the sweetness just bothers me. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 21, 2007 Resisted rating this fresh, was extremely "hot", so 18 months later, here goes. dark mahogany brown with 1 finger semi-dense beige head. Doesn’t grow legs, but coats the glass for awhile. Aroma and flavor have both mellowed quite a bit. Up front nutty roast, with a nice woody character, faint smokiness, but not really peat-like (i’ve been that’s a scotch ale misconception anyway). Background is candied plum and raisin. Flavor quite nice, but doesn’t pack quite the punch the aroma does. All over the place for sure though. Roasted nuts, smoke, wood. Plenty of fruity esters, just hard to pinpoint individual flavors. Smooth mouthfeel, carbonation has mellowed, from what I remember. Very nice overall. Wonder what this would score had everyone given it some time? thegreenrooster (1839), St.louis, Missouri, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 19, 2007 Pour is a dark borwn with a white soapy head. Aroma is a strong helping of malts and dark fruit. Flavor is boozy and hot with some licorice and caramel. A nice take on this style but this is one where the alcohol could be a little lower to make it more enjoyable. sneagrams3 (1757), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 19, 2007 Tasted 7/17/07. 12oz bottle. Filtered with a ruby hue. No head. Syrupy woody nose. Smooth and medium bodied with a big burn. Dark fruits with a sticky palate. Mild effervescence. An almost woody flavor. Smooth and easy. mtchyg (10), East Lansing, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 12, 2007 Wow... with a 9.75% I expected this to have a bite to it but its so smooth its probably dangerous! A slight bitter chocolate taste is evident. adrian910ss (1424), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 1, 2007 Pours a dark murky brown color with a medium creamy beige head. Almost date-like in appearance. Malty aroma with hints of cotton candy, pears, raisins, caramel and some spices. Taste is of caramel malts, candied sugar, pears, banana and light spices. Very good and the alcohol is well hidden. frankenkitty (1902), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 27, 2007 Pours with a deep, thick mahogany body. A slow effervesce predicts viscosity. A minimalist beige heads forms on a gentle pour. This has really lush, deep aromas: peat & brandy, charred oak, cherries & peaches. Full-flavored... a lot of smoky roasts fueled by an undertow of brandied fruits. High ABV is obvious and welcome. Full-bodied and warming with light astringence to coax you into taking another sip. I can’t wait for Dark Horse to get into Illinois, now let’s work on getting them into Chicago.
