A slight bitter chocolate taste is evident. adrian910ss (1435), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 1, 2007 Pours a dark murky brown color with a medium creamy beige head. Almost date-like in appearance. Malty aroma with hints of cotton candy, pears, raisins, caramel and some spices. Taste is of caramel malts, candied sugar, pears, banana and light spices. Very good and the alcohol is well hidden. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 27, 2007 Pours with a deep, thick mahogany body. A slow effervesce predicts viscosity. A minimalist beige heads forms on a gentle pour. This has really lush, deep aromas: peat & brandy, charred oak, cherries & peaches. Full-flavored... a lot of smoky roasts fueled by an undertow of brandied fruits. High ABV is obvious and welcome. Full-bodied and warming with light astringence to coax you into taking another sip. I can’t wait for Dark Horse to get into Illinois, now let’s work on getting them into Chicago.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2007 Served in a snifter. Clear, dark reddish brown. Thick one finger head with typical retention. Wonderful roast malt nose. Nice thick creamy mouth-feel. Flavor is dominated by roast malts. I wouldn’t claim this to be a Scotch Ale, but enjoyable nonetheless. cbkschubert (2013), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2007 12 oz. bottle via trade with sliffy - Pours a hazy light brown color with a thin light tan head which faded pretty quick. No lacing. Aroma is full of esters (pear, apple, raisin) and light toasted malt. Flavor is esters and semi-sweet doughy malt. Has a slight lingering spice/ester aftertaste. Medium body. Alcohol is slightly noticeable. Not your typical Scotch ale, but good none the less. Thanks Dan. Dorwart (1828), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2007 This wisp of head with almost no carbonation. Rich sweet and fruity aroma with plums, raisins, candi sugar and some caramel. Very sweet smelling. Murky dark brown in color. Sweet and flavorful. Big malts, a hint of smoke, more dark fruit, some spices and caramel. Noticable alcohol presence and warming. This is more like a big belgian strong than a scotch ale to me. Very smooth but a little oily. Some earthy overtones which are welcomed. Finish is creamy and warming with a lingering malty and spicy flavor. Not exactly what I had imagined for this brew but still a damn good beer. Thanks to sliffy for this gem. BückDich (4857), McCall, Idaho, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 12, 2007 Bronze brown color, nice off-white head, nice lacing. Nose of sweet toffee and bread, spent coffee grounds, molasses and a very subtle coriander note from the hops. The flavor is a bit smoky with a light metallic but very sweet yet balanced nutty caramel/toffee note. Finish is still sweet and licoricey with lots of sugar and caramel. Scotchy, strong too, eh!
