| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 17, 2007 Very nice, luscious body. Sweet and roasty, but the sweetness may have been attributed to having been consumed following a sourish Belgian brew. Was a pleasure to drink and have the story of the character honored by a formwe Dark Horse brewer. When I get so carried away drinking a beer and neglecting niotes, then would say it’s a compliment. Not to me, to the beer.
Russ, can I have another? EithCubes (2146), Indiana, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 12, 2007 Bottle. Pretty enormously happy with the expansion of Dark Horse distribution into Bloomington. Aroma of roasted malt chocolate, dunkel-toast, caramel, grape, lots of malt, light smoke, cherry, wood, and some heat. Highly carbonated body, no head, dark ruby appearance. Sticky malt. Tastes of smoked cherry, wood, some roast malt, caramel and light anise far in the back, lots of cherry and grape, very, very full body. Salty and lightly alcoholic. Dry aftertaste with a hint of smoked vegetables under the Dubbelish cherry/grape. Alcohol needs to be toned down and better-integrated, but a nice level of flavor and complexity. Beware, though, the first sip is far better than the last. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Apr 11, 2007 Very little head on the deep copper body. The nose is vodka soaked raisins, rubbing alcohol and peaty earth. No carb in the body. The malts open up a bit more in the body - noting burnt caramel, figgy plum, cherry brandy and toasted oak. Bittering hops lingering into the long, warming finish. patrick767 (2033), fort wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 11, 2007 bottle - Pours murky brown with almost no head. The aroma is malt and raisins. The flavor is led by very sweet malt and plenty of distinct dark fruit flavors. The abv is high for the style, but it’s buried underneath all that sweetness. Of course the warming effect remains. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, and smooth, this beer is very drinkable for the abv. I could easily down a few like a session beer, which would probably lead to being quite drunk. Great beer! | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 6, 2007 Bottle from sliffy via Mystery Swap 2.0. Wow, I didn’t realize this one was 9.75% ABV. Turbid dark brown pour with 1-finger tan head and a lot of floaties, which quickly sunk. The aroma is rich caramel/scotch malt, corn flakes, brown sugar, some figgy and pruney fruit. Tastes caramel malty, with a rich, complex palate, and flavor notes of figs and brown sugar. Gets a bit barleywiney as it warms in both mouthfeel and flavor perspectives CharlesDarwin (1845), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 5, 2007 12 Oz Bottle. A very barleywine-esque aroma with intense, deep malt character in apple wine, special B, light pipe tobacco, raisins, cream, walnuts and some port-like fusels. Bright, alive and rich. Pours a ruddied pale brown, with a rim of creamy off-white. Flavor finds warmer ground in a field of sweet alcohols, figs, middle malts, including a bit of roast in a smoky wisp of coffee dredge and cocoa powder, adding some unique depth to the beer. Not thin bodied, nor heavy. A pretty nice body, actually, well balanced by the soothing roast edges and a lemon-pepper hop smack. Great caramelization and nice construction. A bit of yeast climbs in the backseat as we fade down a dusty road. Thanks Shaun! A quite fun Scotch Ale! kmweaver (2463), Sebastopol, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 2, 2007 12oz bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a cloudy, reddish color; off-white head with light retention. Pleasant maltiness and milk chocolate in the aroma. Medium, wet malt and milk chocolate mouthfeel: plenty of bitter chocolate and alcohol; citrus character. Medium, citrus and wet malt finish. Underwhelming for the amount of alcohol. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 31, 2007 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a extremely small sized almost non-existant head of medium sized clear colored bubbles that were very quickly diminishing and left behind a semi-opaque dark brown colored body with some haziness and floating particulate. The mild aroma was brown malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish vinous aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of sweet brown malt and alcohol. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
