| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 6, 2009 Bottle. Deep red-brown colour, very little head or noticable carb. Carmalized sugar, chocolate, bread and nuts in the aroma. Rich rounded caramel, smoke, dark fruit and chocolate in flavour. Good sticky mouthfeel and not nearly as warming as abv would suggest. Dangerously delicious. MrChopin (638), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 3, 2009 Bottle thanks to msante79! Murky chestnut, small beige ring. Nose has lots of malt, sugar, and raisin. More malt in the mouth, sweet, slightly earthy and nutty with some bark and minor smoke. Moderate weight, long earthy malt finish. Pretty well rounded example, no outstanding qualities but nothing lacking. shawnm213 (935), South Bend, Indiana, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 29, 2009 Bottle in trade from ketcherpillar. Thanks man! Pours dark red and clear with as short lived offwhite head. Smell is faint peat along with nutty and fruity with caramel malt. Does have a caramel apple like aroma to it, as the description states. Taste is chocolate and malt with a touch of peat character. Medium to thin body with soft carbonation. Alcohol does show somewhat in the taste, but still a pretty decent beer considering I’m not crazy for the style. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 28, 2009 Nice to have tried, don’t need to but again. Nice balance of toffee and nuts, malt and fruit, surrounded in warmth which suits the burnt toast notes. soccer290 (137), Highland Park, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 26, 2009 12 oz bottle. Got a 4 pk of this, so I’m hoping for the best. Pours a dark caramel brown color with a typical head of Dark Horse (aka, no head to speak of, and whatever there was, it died quickly). Smells of lots of caramel malt, some fruit (apple I’m pretty sure), and a hint of cinnamon. Tastes of some chocolate, a bit of smoke typical with a scotch ale, and caramel malt. Goes down fairly smooth. Honestly, the ’commercial description’ that ratebeer has for this is the most accurate one I’ve read. Overall a decent beer, though if you like scotch ales, I would suggest Founders Backwoods Bastard. waolsen (1222), Littleton, Colorado, USA
