| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 12, 2008 12 oz bottle, pours a dark brown, with red hues when held up to the light. Tan head that mostly dissipates. Aroma of dark fruit, malt, brown sugar, and smoke. Tastes malty, smokey, with a hint of chocolate and brown sugar. No real hop bite to speak of. Alcohol sneaks up on you. Overall, very good scotch ale. TheMurphys (18), Willowbrook, Illinois, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 11, 2008 Pours with a very small head, in fact almost nothing. Color is a great dark brown with some red and semi cloudy. Aroma has lots of dark malt roasted tones, some fruity notes and quite a bit of sweet molasses. Flavor is pretty complex. Starts off with some light bitter chocolate notes from the roasted malts, woody and some smokey flavors in the middle and finishes up with some late caramel malt flavors. This is a pretty high alcohol content beer but it is not detected at all and could get you in trouble. Overall a pretty tasty treat. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Dec 8, 2008 thanks cmubeerman. pours nearly black with slightly visible dark brown and red at the edges. quarter inch head. a cake of yest remains at the bottom of the bottle, which smells like fermenting plums on the same wooden floor that those aetchleiner rauchbeers are made... err, i mean it is smoky and baconish. some redeeming malt saves the aroma from rauchbier fate. taste has lots of smoke, a little chocolate, a fair amount of dark fruit. it is surprisingly thin, all things considered. i let it warm up a bit and the alcohol remains well hidden. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 8, 2008 poured a mahogany brown with a thin head.
Aroma was dried fruity, dark malt molasses and lighter caramel, pretty underwhelming actually.
Flavour was sweet malt, earth/woody, very light alc tones. Body was a bit thin I thought. polomagnifico (535), Saginaw, Michigan, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 7, 2008 Bottle. Aroma has notes of peat, wood, smoke, caramel, dark dried fruits, and earth. Dark maple-syrup-brown hue with a small off-white head that fully diminished and left no lace. Flavor is sweet, sour, woody, earthy and finishes short and slighty bitter. Palate is full bodied and oily flat. Really a good brew. One of my favorites from dark horse now. HonkeyBra (1370), Lemont, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Dec 2, 2008 Dark brown pour with a light, white head. Smokey, wood aroma with notes of caramel, apples, cinnamon. Flavor is sweet, but not cloying. Lots of dark and dried fruits, maybe a bit of chocolate. A bit of wood and scotch. Mouthfeel is a bit thing, otherwise, another great beer from Dark Horse. tmoreau (599), Lombard, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 30, 2008 On tap at Lunar Brewing. Brown tone with a small, white ring of head and light lacing. Aroma of brown sugar, toffee, & a little caramel. Follows to taste with sweet malt & dark, dried fruit. Alcohol is present, but nicely blended in with the complexity of the various flavors. The body is not "wee-heavyish", but moderate, and the carbonation is mild & almost cask. A touch of bitterness at the finish.
