dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA Sep 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep black with a brown ring. Aroma of burnt toasted malt and sweeter blueberry notes. Taste is sweet and toasty, of malt and berries, reminds me of blueberry crisp. Lingering toasty flavors with a hint of berry. Very tasty berry stout. GAManiac (1120), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 9, 2008 Bottle courtesy of StFun poured into a snifter.
This is the last of the stout series for me and this one pours just like the rest, pitch black with a bubbly mocha head that dissipates to a ring. There is little lacing but lots of bubbles rising to the middle throughout. Aroma is surprising for a stout as it smells like a blueberry cobbler with some coffee and chocolate malts thrown in. Fascinating smell. The taste isn’t quite as nice as the aroma but still good with the dark roasted malts and bittersweet chocolates dominating. The blueberries are present but not overwhelming, making for a nice, balanced flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with tons of carbonation and leaves the palate tingling. This is right up there with Plead the 5th in the series and this one may win for originality. Great beer and the best sessionable stout I’ve tasted in a while. rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Sep 6, 2008 Thanks Santa! Bottle. Pours jet black w. a very dark tan head. Nose is wonderfully malty - I’m reminded of expedition. Rich caramel, molasses, some hop presence,a bit of blueberry is there but remains in the back. Flavor is that wonderful malt, toffe, molasses, cocoa, almost burnt sugar, hops. Fruit is there but not specifically blueberry, more an undefined fruitiness. Stunning stuff, especially for 4.5%. I’d drink this daily if I could. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Sep 5, 2008 12 oz. bottle (from B&B in Grand Rapids, MI) served in shaker- poured blacker than a bad night in Hockeytown, foamy and thick one finger brown head formed, laced, and hit on my old lady while I was drinking it. Appealing aroma of darkened malt, chocolate, and blueberries by the bushel! Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt has been toasted hard, blueberries come in the middle and refuse to go away, finish lingers. Easily my favorite in the series thus far... ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Sep 5, 2008 Black colour with a brown head. Roasted, coffee bitter aroma a chocolate and fruity sweet note. Rosted and light earthy flavor with a berry fruityness. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Aug 30, 2008 Bottle from Liquor Stop, Munster. Jet black with very minimal head. Exceedingly dry, which makes the addition of blueberries baffling to me as a blueberry enthusiast. Definite charcoal, roast, and dark chocolate with the requisite blueberry flavor, but only in the finish - and less so than in the aroma. The blueberries aren’t intuitive with this recipe, which make it both a subtle success and a baffling experiment. tmgiddings (6), , Indiana, USA does not count Aug 27, 2008 Oily, dark pour- You can already smell the blueberry pie. The dark tan head quickly cascades into something thin, tight, and solid. There is a considerable amount of sediment in this beer. Blueberry seeds? This brew smells like a warm piece of blueberry pie sitting besides a warm cup of coffee on the counter of a country diner. Personally, I was hoping for more fresh blueberry aroma. The taste was surprising given the nose. The blueberry flavor was very subtle and almost non-existent. Espresso was the strongest flavor, but it was mingled with coffee and bitter chocolate in the background. The Mouthfeel was thin-medium and oily. I was hoping to chew this piece of blueberry pie. Dogbrick (2807), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 20, 2008 Thanks to Rogueone for sharing a bottle, part of a Too-Tres-Fore-Plead The Fifth horizontal tasting. This beer pours brownish-black with a thin beige head that recedes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of anise, malt and light blueberries. Medium, smooth body with flavors of roasted malt, licorice and subtle blueberries. Bits of chocolate at times too. The finish is roasty with a nice blueberry aftertaste. Normally nobody holds a candle to New Glarus when it comes to Fruit beers but this is very enjoyable, and easily the best fruited Stout I have had.
