Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout

Pours a glossy black with a thin cap of brown head that quickly diminishes to a small ring of bubbles that cling to the edge of the glass. The aroma smells almost exactly like the chocolate covered blueberries that I discovered on a trip to Victoria, BC. There’s just a hint of dark roasted malt in the mix, but the blueberries and chocolate dominate the nose. Nice. Medium-bodied and softly effervescent with a pleasant roasted finish. The flavor is of sweet roasted malt with solid blueberry and faint chocolate notes. I’m not quite sure why this one is categorized as a dry stout versus a sweet stout, but regardless of its classification, this is an exceptional brew.

Bouteille 12 oz, courtoisie de Blankboy. De couleur noire et opaque. Nez assez fruité (bleuets frais, petites notes de cerises), de malt assez rôti, de chocolat noir, léger de bois fumé ainsi que des notes de café et de houblon herbeux. Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen et une texture moyennement huileuse et crémeuse. Goût fruité (bleuet légèrement sucrés, présent toute la gorgée) et lactique (léger chocolat au lait avec des notes de yogourt de bleuets) avec un léger goût de fumée de bois lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute rapidement un goût moyennement amer de malt très rôti (voire brûlé) avec un moyen goût de chocolat noir puis un moyen goût de café se rajoute progressivement jusqu’en finale, accompagné d’un léger goût de houblon herbeux ainsi que des traces de noix asséchantes et d’épices (poivre). Post-goût long et un peu sec, moyennement amer de rôti, moyen de chocolat, léger de café et de houblon herbeux avec des notes fruitées (pelures de bleuets).

Pours a black color with a small brown head. Aroma is strong blueberry with chocolate and roasted malts. Blueberry taste isn’t overpowing and meshes well with the chocolate. It’s not a harsh stout but very easy to drink and pretty well balanced.

Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in a shaker. This stout poured a slick, oily black with no head. Just a few lingering tan bubbles. The aroma was made up of strong blueberry notes and chocolate. The flavor included blueberry, chocolate, and roasted malts. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with a lasting dry finish. Very fruity and tasty.

12 oz bottle: Aroma is definite big on blueberries, but not in the mass produced over sweetened way. It’s got a nice dark chocolate covered blueberry aroma and the malts come through with a nice roasted scent. Appearance is pitch black with a thin tan head that diminishes into a soapy tan film at the top of the glass. Taste is blueberry, roasted malt characteristics, smoke, somewhat sweet but not bad at all. A bit of a caramel taste as well with the chocolate notes intermingled nicely. First sip I didn’t really like it, but as you get into this glass it grows on you. Pretty nice!

12oz bottle-A pitch black body with no head whatsoever. Aroma of berry, coffee, and roasted malt. A mouthful brings out blueberry on the front end followed by some coffee with the blueberry lingering throughout the taste. I think the blueberry really stands out which I enjoy. A great tasting stout.

Aroma is moderate to heavy blueberry, moderate malty, burnt, chocolate, coffee, notes of smoked peat. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter, and light acidic with a long duration. (Acidic is berry sweet / sour). Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. (121007)

Pours rich and black with a small khaki head.Blueberries and chocolate on the nose.The flavors match the nose with a slight hint of smoke.Finish was sweet at first then dry at the end.
