chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Feb 19, 2007 Updated: Feb 21, 2008Not over the top but tremendous blueberry flavor without being cloying. You wouldn’t want more than one at any time. Unique to me but more than just a novelty. Solid stout with blueberry twist. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Feb 15, 2007 Bottle from Silphium. Very tasty aroma, dry and bitter herbs, with only very light blueberry. I really have to dig for it, and, had this not been called Blueberry stout, I don’t think I’dve noticed it. I’ve got a couple more bottles though so maybe this one is just a little weak, considering other comments. This is still an extremely delicious stout, perfectly dry and sessionable. MrBendo (1039), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Feb 15, 2007 Thanks to Silphium for the bottle. Pours oil-like, black with almost no head. Aroma of blueberries and roasted malts (chocolate). Pleasant. The taste is less certain; the blueberries seem to get in the way of the stout. Not as much melding as I expected. But, it’s an interesting taste, to be sure. Medium body. Definitely gets better as it warms. Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA Feb 15, 2007 (BIG THANKS TO BBB63 FOR HOOKING THIS UP)pours black as night with a thick super dark brown head.aroma smells allot like a chocolate blueberry pie.very interesting in a very good way.flavor is full of smoke, followed by blueberries, beef jerky, roasted malts, and earth.smelled really nice but the mix of blueberries and smoke in the flavor was a bit strange. KingpinIPA (842), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Feb 8, 2007 Dark color. Smell of malt, chocolate, caramel, blueberries, hops hint of coffee and raspberries. It smells like my all time favorite cereal, Boo Berry. Love the smell. Taste of malt, blueberries, coffee, coco, dark chocolate, copper, hops and a nice dry bitterness at the end. I really enjoyed the smell in this stout! Nice job! Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA Jan 30, 2007 This should be interesting. Pours a pitch black color, brown head. Same as the other DH stouts I’ve opened. The aroma, well it changes everything. REAL blueberries. Its a really great aroma, the berries work with the beer. Drinking this is interesting. The blueberries act with the dark malts to dry things out. But not too dry. the flavors are all subtle, the blueberry, the chocolate and roasted malts all combine to make this beer what it is. Very interesting stuff. markgugs (86), Wood Ridge, New Jersey, USA Jan 29, 2007 A: Pours like many stouts, a nice inky brown/black with very little head. Keeps swirling along the top of the mug after a bit, hardly any lacing at all. Looks nice if you like stouts, won’t make you drool with desire if you don’t.
S: Considering that this is a fruit/veggie beer, the smell/scent of blueberries is not as overpowering as it could have been, though it’s definitely there. After those first initial whiffs, it’s more of a "standard" stout smell (roasted cocao, dark fruits, etc.).
T: Okay, I’m not sure how to approach this one. As far as it being a tasty stout, it most certainly is, but there is very, very little actual blueberry flavor IMO. It is far more attuned toward a quality roasted stout, with hints of cocoa, dessert fruits (I suppose this is where the faint blueberry notes come in), and a sweetened baker’s chocolate. The cocoa sticks with your palate with each sip, but otherwise it finishes quickly. Not bad, not exceptional.
M: This beer feels brilliant in the ol’ mouth, it just coats the tongue and roof of the mouth and flows down the throat so well. Wow, that sounds rather, errr, beerographic. A perfect blend of texture and carbonation.
D: Given that this beer is NOT very fruity or sweet, I think it’d be pretty easy to drink several in a night. A fantastic after-dinner drink, or for sitting around with friends. Not sure of the ABV since it’s not listed, but the drinkability is solid.
I’m very new to Dark Horse Brewing Co., but thanks to my friend Dan from Michigan, I’m getting the opportunity to sample some of these wondrous brews. Seek them out! WeeHeavySD (2941), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jan 29, 2007 12 oz bottle courtesy of footbalm, thanks! I have to say I really like blueberries and I am usually dissapointed with Blueberry brews. The brew pours black with a thin brown head. The head seems uncharacteristically dark for a stout that is so small in ABV. The blueberry aroma is fanstastic, it is subtle, but upon opening the top I could smell it and it smells fantastic. I can almost taste the berries in my mouth. The taste blends the subtle blueberry with a nice malty rich body. This is a very succesful blueberry beer in my opinion. Great work darkhorse.
