Thanks to artusory for the beer in a recent trade. I’ve had a handful of Dark Horse beers. This is the best so far, beating out the 3 Guys Off the Scale. The blueberry is not overpowering but it is obvious enough where this beer gets its name.
Aroma / Appearance - The nose was an interesting combination of blueberry pie, chocolate, mocha and smoke. It reminds me of a warm blueberry cobbler. The pour was deep black and fluid with just a hint of head. The lacing was muddy brown as it slid down the side of my sample glass.
Flavor / Palate - A bitter combination of blueberries, cherries, smoke and roasted malts comprise the taste. It does not change much over the course of the beer but is very consistant. It feels as if someone liquified blueberry cobbler in a smoky environment. It was very enjoyable, though not quite on par with New Glarus Belgian Red. Still, if this ever makes it to Madison I could easily see picking up some more. footbalm (1219), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

Man o’ man this thing was very dark, poured her hard and got very little head. Blueberry? I am so glad that the "fruit" was not a major part of thie but rather a team player which allows this to be more complex with some very rich roasted malt thing sgoing on.Thick on the tongue. nuplastikk (1218), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 13, 2009 12oz bottle. Opaque black, maybe a hint of brown, with a beige head. Sweet, mellow chocolate blueberry aroma. The blueberry and chocolate really reach out and grab you after a few sips. With no alcohol warmth to compete, the mellow, roasty, blueberry laced malt really shines. A touch intense on the fruity side, I can see where this beer would draw it’s detractors. Light sourness, but mostly sweet overload. A classic, unique version of a Stout. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA

The beer looked amazing, poured dark brown almost black with fluffy thick dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, and blueberries. A lot of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee in the flavor, some toffee, carmel, and blueberry syrup. Very tasty, nicely rounded out flavors. Mellow, fluffy, thick, yet extremely drinkable. love it. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 3, 2006 Bottle thanks to Kevin (Pailhead): Mostly opaque dark brown with a small, thick & creamy light brown head. The aroma is fresh juicy blueberries, light coffee notes, black current, dark roasted malt. Taste is a nicely balanced blend of juicy blueberries and dark roasted malts, with a hint of caramel, coffee, cocoa powder, and light vinous grapes. Medium-full bodied, definitely feels pretty easy to drink, moderate-medium carbonation, finishes lightly chalky with notes of blueberries, baked grains, and roasted malt. Nice balance of flavors here. OldMrCrow (1200), Seattle, Washington, USA

ours dark as india ink, making me wonder about the ABV until I tasted it. That flavor isn’t actually all that bad - the blueberries are relatively subtle there until you get to the finish, where you do get too much blueberry. But goodness, the aroma: canned blueberry syrup like what you’d get at Waffle House. This one totally doesn’t work for me. There’s some nice bitter chocolate tones in there, but man....it’s a blueberry mess. Huge disappointment. markwise (1200), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA

Nose is roasted malt, perfume, prickly overripe blueberries, and some coffee. Flavor is roast, chocolate, blueberry puree, and sweet darkness. Medium bodied with a lingering sweet finish. Interesting spin on this style. GAManiac (1189), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

This is the last of the stout series for me and this one pours just like the rest, pitch black with a bubbly mocha head that dissipates to a ring. There is little lacing but lots of bubbles rising to the middle throughout. Aroma is surprising for a stout as it smells like a blueberry cobbler with some coffee and chocolate malts thrown in. Fascinating smell. The taste isn’t quite as nice as the aroma but still good with the dark roasted malts and bittersweet chocolates dominating. The blueberries are present but not overwhelming, making for a nice, balanced flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with tons of carbonation and leaves the palate tingling. This is right up there with Plead the 5th in the series and this one may win for originality. Great beer and the best sessionable stout I’ve tasted in a while.
