Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout

some funky shit going on in the flavor. heavy cloying sweetness, medium bitterness, paper napkin. aroma’s kinda crazy. at first pure blueberries from a metre away. a yard. then it was awful, then it was better after the nose accommodated. there’s some crazy off-taste i can’t really identify. no alcohol taste, but it’s a meek 4.5abv. oh right, most imporantly, it’s got walker brother’s blueberry waffles - not muffins - all over it.

I am a Marylander and one of the Old Line State’s biggest embarassments is Oxford Raspberry Wheat. Being a Maryland patriot, I hate beers that advertise fruit in the name. That feeling has come to an end. Psych Prof, a prophet really, has provided me with this blueberry elixir that frankly boggles my scrotum. Unlike many other reviewers, I encounter almost no head. There is little carbonation to get in the way of this complex, nearly imperial, stout. Completely amazing. Imagine Storm King and blueberries. Sound weird? It is.

bottle poured a nice black in color with a foamy tan head that held a ring on the glass. aroma starts right off with over ripe blueberry, sweetness, and lightly roasted malt. mouth feel seems light and the carbonation is very low. flavor has a bit more chocolate malt, faint smoke, and surprisingly light blueberry considering the nose. picks up some coffee as it sits and although i was somewhat torn while drinking it by the end i warmed up to it.

From coyotehunter via trade. An attractive, super-dark brown pour with a one-finger tall brown head. The aroma was blueberry (sometimes it smelled like real blueberries, sometime it smelled like Boo-Berry cereal) along with lots of coffee. The flavor was more of the blueberry mash-up, coffee and some chocolate. Mouthfeel was almost medium in body. No alcohol noticed. OK. Not something I’d fall back on, but worth a try.

This beer very much resembles an Impy. Pours very thick and oily and solid black with a dark tan head. Chocoalty nose with some mild fruit, blueberries I presume. The flavor was sweet blueberries, you know, the big ones, with sweet milk chocolate coming around about halfway through to really make this one enjoyable. Creamy/oily palate. Thanks to Sully for this better than expexted stout!!

Body is black with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma, with chocolate and blueberry in the background. A nice combination for sure. The blueberry and coffee compliment each other well in the flavor. A different and interesting beer. I like beers where the fruit aspect is secondary versus a strong fruit beer. Very nice for a low alcohol beer.

Bottle from Liquor Stop, Munster. Jet black with very minimal head. Exceedingly dry, which makes the addition of blueberries baffling to me as a blueberry enthusiast. Definite charcoal, roast, and dark chocolate with the requisite blueberry flavor, but only in the finish - and less so than in the aroma. The blueberries aren’t intuitive with this recipe, which make it both a subtle success and a baffling experiment.
