Commercial Description:
Boskeun is the nickname of Jo, one of the two brothers who preferred to brew blond beer at home. It is a special Easter beer, one of the first real Belgian Easter beers. (Slaghmuylder's paasbier being first). It has been brewed with pale malt, Golding hops, cane sugar and refermented with native honey. As it is a seasonal beer we suggest not to keep it eternally. The name Boskeun means rabbit of the wood (virgin wood, maybe?) and the label shows it, sampling the last brew.

Bottle. Cloudy yellow with huge white head. Citrus, yeast and spices in the aroma. Taste is fruity, honey, candy, spicey, a bit like a tripel but more interesting. Medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, can’t spot the alcohol. Like it.

Sweet malt aroma with floral undertones. Light cloudy brown colour with good head and lacing. Smooth fresh flavour with malt and hops. Smooth palate.

33cl. bottle. Hazy golden with an enormous white frothy head that wouldn’t go away. Aroma of apricots, lemons and pepper. Flavor starts off mildly sweet before turning somewhat dry on the finish. Lots of tropical fruit and spices. Strange mouthfeel that I can’t describe but takes a little away from the enjoyment. Nice though.

Cloudy golden, foaming head. Complex fruity aroma, bananas, maybe persimmon. Spicy yeasty finish. Nice combo of strong belgian funky flavors, complexity and drinkable soft body. Refreshing even.

33cl bottle. Served in my NB Worthy glass. Blond in color with a healthy sized, fluffy, white head. The aroma is yeast, lemon, pepper?, spicy as all get out. The taste is amazingly complex, it is creamy, at first, with an almost lactose character that makes it taste (and feel) like whipped cream. The next wave of taste is yeast, with hints of flour, before morphing into a fiery, spicy, lemony finish that knocks your socks off. I know, now, why that bunnies freakin eyes are popping out of his skull, on the bottle. Pretty tasty.

"A" on the cap? Pours hazy orange/copper/gold with a permanent, mountainous, white rock formation for a head. Nose of pungent past ripe fruits, wet grass, herbal/floral perfume, alcohol, sugar. Flavor adds a base of sweet malt, some crisp hops, earthy funk, all of the above, and a dry, floral, yeasty finish. Medium/full, well balanced palate. Great brew.

On opening this beer smells immediately like one of the better beers I’ve rated in a while. Looks quite ordinary with a seriously hazy amber colour and a large sudsy white head that lasts for a while, but it still appeals because of the . . . . aroma, which is light barnyard and vegetable yeasty, light grain and medium fruity floral nectar hops and a litle bit band aidy as it warms. I just love the spicy honey sweet fruity start to this beer which is a tad short before revealing medium drying bitterness hops which lingers for some time. I didn’t really get the alcohol much until the very end. Not my fave De Dolle but still pretty drinkable. I always give these guys a bonus mark or two in the overall because they are at least trying to do something interesting and new in the Belgian beer scene.

06.11.05 330ml bottle thanks to footbalm. Dark and clouded amber with fading white head of foamy suds (or sudsy foam?). Lace is sporadic but coating where it sticks. Aroma is peaches, anise, orange, and dried tropical fruits. It certainly has the De Dolle house character. Flavor is sweet with more dried fruits, tropical trail mix, some floral honey. Astringent to finish, chalky even, despite very full body. Alcohol really comes through in the end. Thanks Eric!
