Commercial Description:
Dolle Dulle Teve Special Reserva 2004 is a special version of De Dolle's Dulle Teve, which has been matured for over 24 months in wooden casks previously used by Etienne Dupont/France to mature his famous Calvados de Normandie. The over two year maturation in those wooden casks has allowed De Dolle Dulle Teve to mellow, lose its agressive carbonation and dryness, and develop a new balance of flavors triggered by the tannin, vanilla and butterscotch flavors of E.Dupont's Calvados casks. In addition the "invisible" Calvados hidden in the wood itself has pushed the alcohol of De Dolle Dulle Teve Special Reserva to about 12% to 13%

11.2 oz bottle aged in a 2003 cask. Pours a cloudy golden brown with a small fluffy white head. Aroma of sweet apple cider, caramel, spice and yeast. Taste is slightly spicy with hints of apple cider, caramel, bread dough and fresh yeast. Very nice.

33cL bottle, 2005 bottling, courtesy of hopdog. Thanks, Steve! Pours a clear, bright, oily honey-orange color; fluffy off-white head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Very pleasant aroma, showing a solid, mildly tart apple-cider / Calvados character, with a lot of yeastiness, butterscotch, and slightly dry breadiness throughout. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: the Calvados barrel presence is well-integrated with the original generous and dry character of Dulle Teve; loads of butterscotch, apple juice, yeast, and bread; relaxed carbonation compared to the original, and without any rough booziness from its time in the barrel; some alcoholic warmth is certainly present, but not overly so; very nicely done beer, though not quite as good as its base. Lengthy finish, showing plenty of bread and dough, with lingering apple notes and dry yeast.

Sampled blind at "Better Know a Style: Abbey Tripel" tasting. Clear orange amber with small white head. Orange aroma with caramel anf slight alc. Alc is the strongest flavor upfront with orange, yeast, spice, and earthiness. Medium body and well carbonated. Not bad.

sampled blind at "Better Know a Style: Abbey Tripel". pours clear golden with white head. nose of spiced, toffee, yeasty. flavor of citrus, pear, yeasty, coriander. lively carbonation, spritzy-champagne like. dry, pretty nice. i was surprised this was the special reserva as i didn’t pick up much influence from barrel aging. regular teve was much much better as the yeast seemed far more fruity and complex.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber color with a generous but quickly-dissipating white head. Aroma is vinious up front, with malt, wood, and vanilla notes. Flavor is the same, with an interesting alcohol burn at the end. Amazing complexity added to this already-great beer.
