Pours a cola color with an incredibly carbonated, effervescent, rich tan head. Would I expect any less from a Belgian yeast? Smells effusively of dark chocolate with some sweet licorice and espresso notes atop gently toasted malts. Earthy hops also come through well in the nose. The flavor is something altogether different, very sweet and fruity up front , and the roasted malts have a more burnt character on the tongue. Bitter coffee lingers on the finish. Has a very dry and bubbly mouthfeel, uncharacteristic for a stout yet typical of Belgian beers. Overall, a unique beer, but off the mark of what I desire in a stout. Too much bitterness, sweetness, and carbonation.

Fruity, rich and slightly sour stout. Nose of chocolate, prunes, toffee, roast and caramel. The mouthfeel is quite full, slightly thick, and carbonation is medium. Additional smoke, coffee, raisin and licorice in the flavor. Ends rather smooth and slightly bitter, but mostly roasty and slightly warm. Not your traditional stout, really more of a farmhouse Belgian Black Ale.

Bottle. Roasty malt aroma, relatively mild, with some fruitiness. Dark brown body, large tan head. Very fizzy carbonation gives a mouthfeel that is deceptively light. Flavor is mostly roasty and not very complex. Brief finish.

burnt coffee aroma, some malts. after pour mellows a bit to some heavy barley wine notes, raisin, dark fruits, prune maybe seems strong in alcohol. dark dark brown color, but definitely brown. Massive carbonation explosion upon opening, but perhaps was just my bottle. Duvel level head formation. palate is fizzy as commensurate with pour. taste is highly bitter, somewhat coffee stoutish. Still a hint of high ABV, but the more subtle flavors of the aroma seem missing.

This is completely disgusting. Pours a brown color with a monster creamy light brown head. What was awesome was I drank this outside at -1 degrees and the head was freezing into meringue like gobs within minutes. Nose is grapes, battery acid, and as the guy below me said a weird salty sour nose. Taste is just just tart and bitter and kind of smokey but also fruity. Its a total mess. I don’t know if this batch was screwed up but I don’t want anything to do with this beer again anytime soon. De dolle is officially on notice.

bottle from ølbutikken. pours brown, is black in the glass, giant thick brown smooth head. strange salty/sour aroma. not what i’d expect in a stout. faint chocolate. perhaps the salty aroma is from licorice? flavor sour, mixed with the ordinary stout flavors. tart. licorice. slight smoked stuff in the aftertaste. warming up it seems to be more balanced. the salty lime taste lingers in the background and makes it all a bit surreal.

Pours out black with lots of brown foam, overflowing. Sweet roasty malty. Lots of chocolate, coffe, and molasses. But with a lot funk. Some tartness. Great twist on style.

Reviewed 12/16/2008 (bottle): Foams over unattended. Pours a dark black body, can’t see through. Big creamy, smooth head, tan head. Good lacing. Toffee sweet malty aroma. Strong molasses and some alcohol, but not much. Molasses flavor, hot aftertaste. Some light coffee, and .roasted flavors. Somewhat dusty, ashy. Creamy mouthfeel, fizzy and almost harsh. Pretty tasty.
