From my notes: reddish brown pour with a massive bubbly tan head and good retention. aroma of dark malts and chocolate. tastes of roasted malts and tobacco mixed with a light sour bite. hint of alcohol warmth in the nose and taste. surprising low carbonation on the tongue given the large head. coldmeat23 (233), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 11, 2009 Pours a deep, dark chocolate brown. Scant traces of mahogany appear at the edges when held in front of a powerful light source. Most impressive. Big chocolate colored foamy head that fades quite slowly. Excellent retention and some decent lacing.
Sweet, beautiful malty goodness! Pineapple and dark fruit notes. Currants and black cherries. Roasted coffee. Caramel. Toasted nuts. Brown sugar.
Burnt malt and coffee beans intermingle with chocolate notes. Currants, figs and dark cherry tartness mix with green apple peel crispness. A sour presence, not unlike a flemish ale. Fortunately, I love flemish sour ales.
I would love to rate this higher for mouthfeel but, unfortunately, I find it to be quite weak and waterey. Way too thin for the style, IMO. Everything else about it indicates that it will be thick like molasses. If only.
Very drinkable. Very tasty and good. If it just had a bit more body, it could be perfect. Which means that I will keep searching.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2009 Very dark brown , almost black with nice intens beige head on top. Slight yeastyness with a refined roasty character. A medium body with a fine peppery touch, also a slight fruity twist to it. Touches of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts are well in balans. Aftertaste is elegant, roasty and it hides very well its 9%. wyzzywyz22 (795), Wirral, Merseyside, England

Deep dark brown pour with a plump head that lingered for a lil’ while. Enticing aroma that made me think this was going to be a good thing. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate and roasted malt predominating. Lively mouthfeel, but loads to admire in the flavour which revealed more of its complex character with each passing sip. Lovely bitterness in the finish. A very fine Belgian stout. Sweet aroma with a hint of liquorice. A roasted malt flavour with coffee tones. The rush in the mout ens with a bitter wave and the coffee tones stay a bit longer and get caught up with a soure tone.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 6, 2009 Bottle from Knightly. Not quite black, a deep brown color (although looks black once in the glass) and pours with a thick tan head with nice retention. The aroma is charcoal, leather, vanilla, wood, definitely some campfire smokey scent in there. Flavors are peppery and roasty but easy drinking and even a tad thin. The flavors do pick up with a lot of what’s going on in the aroma, tobacco, wood, smoke with the addition of chocolate, black coffee, and caramel. Not all that complex. I’d say this one is good but not great. gyllenbock (309), Stockholm, Sweden

Beautiful dark color with a brownish rather thick foam. A lot of coffee in the aroma also vanilla, burnt malt, caramel and licorice. The taste was dominated by coffee, not so much chocolate as you might have expected. Clearly a tasty stout that was enjoyable to drink.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 3, 2009 pours out super thick and black like an overpowering dark roast coffee with a very thick lumpy tan mocha colored head that produces thick lacing. the body is black as night with no light passing through whats so ever. the aromas are kind of sweet with hints of coffee and dark chocolate with a tiny hint of the spicyness from the hops and alcohol. i can also scoop the head out and literaly eat it with a spoon, its that thick(and i really did it). it is really full bodied and has a nice hoppy hit in the begining with a roasted coffee and chocolate body coming through as the main flavours with a little bit of sugar. it finishes with bitter sweet caramel and pale malt and has a wonderful aftertaste that is meant to be savored and i do savor it.
