Ansset13 (124), Wilmington, North Carolina, USA Nov 10, 2007 Pour had hugh amble head with pitch black body. The nose is musty, with dark dried fruit, yeast and hints of caramel mixed with dark chocolate. the taste is largely dark roasted malt, hints of burnt chocolate and sugars. Good flavor but not balanced with enough sweetness.
KnN (306), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Sep 14, 2008 Pours a deep rich brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is nutty, malty, with some chocolate and toasted nuts mixed with a hint of coffee.
Flavor is smooth as silk with just a hint of roasted coffee bitterness and just another little hint of alcohol. This is a very nice stout. JK54B (353), Finland Sep 14, 2008 Dark brownish colour. Pale brown head. Some sournes in the taste. Also some bitter chocolate aromas. Also some prunes in the taste. Tasted at Pikkulintu. bombshelter (348), Washington, Washington DC, USA Sep 11, 2008 Bottle from Chevy Chase, purchased in ’05. The years have been very kind to this gem. Pours a barely-red-tinged black, big bubbles but mild lacing. Aroma has started developing more of that traditional De Dolle acidity that mingles with the caramel, figs, and some roast. Alcohol is there too, but only a mild spicy backnote. Body is full, luscious, like drinking milk chocolate. Big strong dark fruit up front, carbonation helping it from being too heavy. Flavor coasts through the range of malty complexity, stopping at chocolate, a bit of sherry, and finishing with a bittersweet, toasty, booze-laced finish. A world-class beer. Just fantastic. thill25 (191), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 4, 2008 33cl. bottle...pours dark, opaque brown with a tan, soap-foam head...Aromas of vinous fruits, yeast, bitter chocolate, cocoa, light coffee. Lots of cola like flavors, mixed with dark bitter-sweet chocolate, roasted malts, and a strong espresso presence. It also had a fruity sweetness not unlike toasted figs or dries dates. Highly carbonated, somewhat acidic, and a lingering bitter aftertaste. Excellent! hellbilly (900), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Sep 3, 2008 bottle by way of yobdoog... opaque black body with a hot cocoa colored head. it’s fluffy and leaves a bit of lacing as it comes to permanent rest as a film. chocolate-y aroma with whiffs of ash, black raisins, coffee, lactose and some spiciness (from the yeast?). the flavor is kinda christmas cake-y... yeast, licorice, dried fruits along with chocolate, charred wood, coffee, figs, floral yeast and raisins burnt on the grill completely dried out and hollow. you know you shouldn’t eat them but you do any way. tart dry finish leads to coffee in the aftertaste. medium body. acidic carbonation... and a lot of it. relatively easy to put away @ 9%.
