Not quite black, a deep brown color (although looks black once in the glass) and pours with a thick tan head with nice retention. The aroma is charcoal, leather, vanilla, wood, definitely some campfire smokey scent in there. Flavors are peppery and roasty but easy drinking and even a tad thin. The flavors do pick up with a lot of what’s going on in the aroma, tobacco, wood, smoke with the addition of chocolate, black coffee, and caramel. Not all that complex. I’d say this one is good but not great.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 2, 2009 Pours dark inky brown, black in the glass, with a lasting three finger tan head, fine lacing. Strong grass and coffee aroma, with notes of chocolate, toast, cherry, and pine. Zesty, crisp, lightly dry, medium-bodied; I’ve had thicker porters. More floral and grassy flavors, coffee, toffee, toast, chocolate. Medium bitter finish, balances out nicely. A really nice brew with a surprising amount of delicate hop notes that really stand out -- unique for the style. andersand (359), Malmö, Sweden
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Oily black looking with a huge brown head that basically climbs out of the bottle and if youre lucky into your glass. Looks like a stout that could only come from Belgium. Aroma is sharp roasted malts with notes of coffe and dark bitter chocolate. Flavour is more complex with notes of dark dried fruits, sharp slightly acidic coffe which adds to the drinkability. Body is extremely slick and not as fizzy and lively as the head would lead you to belive. Very flavourfull, alive and intense. DJMonarch (6845), Northwich, Cheshire, England

Big fruit aroma. Small beige head. Black roasted very strong in alcohol and fruity with a little dryness in a crisp and bitter chocolaty roast finish. darn1207 (561), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 26, 2009 Sampled this after a De Dolle Oerbier Special Reserva with mitchgt. From my notes: reddish brown pour with a massive bubbly tan head and good retention. aroma of dark malts and chocolate. tastes of roasted malts and tobacco mixed with a light sour bite. hint of alcohol warmth in the nose and taste. surprising low carbonation on the tongue given the large head. coldmeat23 (233), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 11, 2009 Pours a deep, dark chocolate brown. Scant traces of mahogany appear at the edges when held in front of a powerful light source. Most impressive. Big chocolate colored foamy head that fades quite slowly. Excellent retention and some decent lacing.
Sweet, beautiful malty goodness! Pineapple and dark fruit notes. Currants and black cherries. Roasted coffee. Caramel. Toasted nuts. Brown sugar.
Burnt malt and coffee beans intermingle with chocolate notes. Currants, figs and dark cherry tartness mix with green apple peel crispness. A sour presence, not unlike a flemish ale. Fortunately, I love flemish sour ales.
I would love to rate this higher for mouthfeel but, unfortunately, I find it to be quite weak and waterey. Way too thin for the style, IMO. Everything else about it indicates that it will be thick like molasses. If only.
Very drinkable. Very tasty and good. If it just had a bit more body, it could be perfect. Which means that I will keep searching.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2009 Very dark brown , almost black with nice intens beige head on top. Slight yeastyness with a refined roasty character. A medium body with a fine peppery touch, also a slight fruity twist to it. Touches of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts are well in balans. Aftertaste is elegant, roasty and it hides very well its 9%. wyzzywyz22 (782), Wirral, Merseyside, England

Deep dark brown pour with a plump head that lingered for a lil’ while. Enticing aroma that made me think this was going to be a good thing. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate and roasted malt predominating. Lively mouthfeel, but loads to admire in the flavour which revealed more of its complex character with each passing sip. Lovely bitterness in the finish. A very fine Belgian stout. Sweet aroma with a hint of liquorice. A roasted malt flavour with coffee tones. The rush in the mout ens with a bitter wave and the coffee tones stay a bit longer and get caught up with a soure tone.
After decapping the bottle it started gushing
