Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. A nose of chocolate, black currant, alcohol and yeast. Taste is of red wine, raspberries, cherries and dried, fermented fruit. It’s acidic, and the finish is a bit dry, and has a pinch of alcohol in it. Halfway through the taste, a kick-ass complex bitterness comes out and dominates. It’s not a hoppy, flowery bitterness, but rather a "green", raw, plant-like bitterness. Like chewing on the white stuff between a grapefruits pulp and peel. This brew is surprisingly tart and sour! Strange, as it tasted more like a regular belgian strong fresh, just 6 months ago. Back then it was just average. Now it’s a masterpiece truly worthy of it’s hype. It’s amazingly complex, and it sure beats all the belgian strongs, lambics and sours that has a rating below 4 here on ratebeer imo. Just don’t have it fresh. It’s really not the same beer. I hope that explains the low rating it’s gotten.

33cl Bottle. Poured a large beige head that lasted some time. Color was a cloudy amber. Very complex aroma and taste: sour apple, gapes and booze stand out. The carbonation was very strong at first but mellowed near the end of my glass... and the flavors seemed to blend better too. Overall I thought it was excellent. I hope to have another one soon.

Neutral looking brown with a small beige head. Aroma is vinous, malty and somewhat "milky" with refreshing fruity yeast esters. Mouthfeel is lively, maybe a tad too lively at first and the brew needs to calm down in the glass for a while. Flavour is similar to aroma with deep brown, slightly acidic malt character, unique yeast character with a semi dry finish that makes this rather strong beer dangerously drinkable.

33cl Bottle, purchased at Spiritus Fermenti - Providence, RI. Intense, rich boozy apple aroma paired with juicy caramelized malt sugars and the signature De Dolle yeasts. Absolutely delicate and perfumed. Brilliant. Pours a murky rusty red-brown, with a tall finger of browned pear flesh foam. Flavor is quick and explosive. Volatile blasts of brown bread, apple brandy and hard sauce move around the palate. The high level of carbonation brings minerals and base malt to the back of the palate. Peppery and reminiscent of booze-soaked fruit cake in the sinuses. Delicious and well-done.

I’ve been waiting for this one. Good to see it back in Colorado. Very clean refreshing smell. Lightness that defies it’s color. carmelly and green applely malt scent. This is a great one. Such a clean palate with an aftermath of dark fruits leading to more clean pastures. Geez, the Belgians are Gods. I’ll drink this one again and I’ll get more from it.

Bottle - Pours mahogany with a huge cream-colored head. Smells of sour blueberries, raisins, red wine, sweet bready malt, and a whiff of booze. Taste is raisins, sweet malt, and a sour, bitter finish. There’s some nice warmth, but it would be nice if this settled down a bit and evened out. It’s a bit too syrupy and the carbonation is jacked up a bit too much. The first De Dolle beer I’ve had that was a bit disappointing.
