Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. (33 cl bottle) Dark-red color with a foamy head. Smells of sirup and wood, also in the flavor. Really reminds of Kasteelbier Bruin, only a little more bitter. Very nice!

Thanks to HogTownHarry. I think this has been aged 4 years. Appearance: Cloudy brown/red with a one finger off white head. Aroma: Dark fruit, cinnamon, vanilla, leather, sugar, yeast. Flavour: Malty, sticky, toffee, lots of carbonation on the tongue, some yeast and caramel with a long toffee finish.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours a dark brown/red color with a nice beige foamy head. Aroma is very nice: vinous with toffee, milk chocolate, yeast, dried fruits/berries, gingerbread dough, nougat, red wine (or more of mulled wine with raisins maybe). Flavour is also very vinous and a bit fruity with notes of toffee, milk chocolate, spices, gingerbread dough, nougat and raisins. There’s a certain red wine/mulled wine character to it with a nice balanced acidity/tartness, overall this is dry and not that sweet which I like. Filling, medium to fullbodied in the mouth. Carbonation was first quite lively but it calms down a bit after while which makes all the nice flavours come out and it also makes it very smooth. Overall this a fantastic, complex and interesting beer and I look forward to try it again!

Bottle. Look: Red-brown, big golden beige head. Lots of bubbles. Smell: Sweet with small sourness. Lots of milk chocolate and fruit. Some butter. Taste: Sweet milk chocolate, butter and fruits at first. Tart, light smoked finish. More smoke and some vanilla in the aftertaste. Has an almost oaked aged taste to it, although more dry. Overall: Very nice beer! I’m buying more tomorrow to put in the cellar.

Date: 12/1/09 Beer info: Bottled in brown 330ml bottle 9.0% abv BB N/A Sampling Notes: Served chilled in chalice. Bit of a gush but well saved. Pours a milk chocolate brown body with a tight 2-inch tan head that hangs around very leisurely. Aroma has a good richness about it; dark chocolate fused with prunes, dates, figs and raisins, dark brown sugar, liquorice, vinous berries with slight woodiness, bit of yoghurty funk business but very appealing overall. Rich bodied, excellent length, fluffy carbonation lending to an almost milk-shake-like texture. Bit of dryness aluding to the alcohol, but not much indication otherwise. Deeply complex and rich body; figs, prunes, plenty of dried fruit upfront, sweet nutty malt, dark chocolate, brown sugar, woody spice, definately a journey beer. Finish brings out some dryness, finish very much like a dry red-wine, tannic, quite bitter, an aire of alcohol leaving me wanting to sip again to indulge to palate once again... Definately one of best Belgian darks i’ve had in a long while. Kind of wish it were easier to come buy, because this certainly gives Chimay a run for its money!

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy brown color with a large beige head. The aroma is vinous, dark fruits, caramel, some spice. The flavor is a complex mixture of yeast, caramel malt, cherries, oak, other fruit notes, spices, with a tart finish. Medium bodied with a little zing on the palate. This is a solid beer from start to finish.
