Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. 2005 bottle / 11.2 oz - Pours very dark ruby red with a tight tan head. The aroma has lots of rich caramel that is smooth and rich, toffee, light Belgium earthiness ~ doesn’t come across as complex as I’d thought it would, but it is quite nice. Medium body that’s quite crisp with sharp carbonation that doesn’t interfere with the flavors. The flavor starts with a mix of rich caramel, rich berries, funky yeastiness, biscuit and a variety of spices. The flavor is far more complex that the aroma suggested. The finish is spicy, funky and tart. Great beer.

0.33 l bottle. Hazy mahagony color, very fizzy. Acidic, yeasty, meaty, caramelly, berryish, perfumed and spicy aroma with notes of pepper, vanilla, almonds, leather, prunes and raisins. Dryish yeasty and berryish flavor with some dull and grassy hops as well as woody notes. Very heavy disturbing carbonation.

Not a big fan. A sour alcohol taste. Is not hoppy, not thick and stouty, not fruity. Just pungent tasting dull.

The aroma offered by this beer is an infusion of yeast, dates, and alcohol. It is a light cocoa colored solution that sits under a thick off-white head. This beer is heavy and thick as it enters the mouth. The taste is a combination of wheat, dates, yeast, nuts, and citrus fruit hidden in the background. The aftertaste is a mild nutty one that lingers well.

Wow, another masterpiece by De Dolle. Nutmeg and sour apples in the nose. Very lively carbonation that fills up the body. Pours thicker than most imperial stouts and looks beautifully like impenetrable shoe polish in the glass. Tastes very fruity, very rotten-citrus spicy. Absolutely fantastic.

Dark mahogany pour, medium white head that fades but lasts. Aroma is belgian yeast all the way, some sour notes, fruits, brandy. Flavor is much the same slight sour notes, brandy, and lots of spicy yeast. Sugary sweet but not cloying. Tons of carbonation but with a thing mouthfeel. A touch of chocolate way in the background with the fruit and brandy just ruling this beer. Complex but not a great tasting beer.

Pours translucent chocolate-brown with first-fizzy, then-creamy tan head. Aroma is sour with notes of raisin, apple, maple, brown sugar, and, like the last reviewer has stated, a hint of chocolate-covered mint (good call on that). Flavor is nicely sour with notes of spicy apple cider, raisin, grape, and a hint of yeast. Palate is fairly creamy but also sustains a dry finish. Impressive.

33 cl. Cloudy, turbulent chocolate-brown beer with a large, lasting head. Aroma is brown sugar, sour leather, and sweet herb, akin to a mild chocolate-covered mint. Flavors of rum, raisin, sour toffee, salty leather, and maybe some earthy peppery spice (wait, maybe that’s the carbonation and alcohol instead). Strong alcohol finish. Dryish, with a highly carbonated, airy mouthfeel that’s annoying; seems like it might be almost medium-bodied if it would stop fizzing.
