Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Bottle - Pours dark brown. Sweet aroma, malty, brown sugar, hint of fruit. Rich flavor of roasted malt, caramel, molassess, spice - hops with a bit of sour dough bread. Fermented fruit, like raisins and prunes. Warming alcohol ... ala wine.

Pours murky brown with a big head of bigger bubbles that doesn’t last very long. Aroma is sweet with a bit of spice. Flavors consists of dried fruit, alcohol and just a bit of tartness. The finish is roasted coffee flavors. Another winner from De Dolle.

11.2oz Bottle $4.49 Sam’s Downers Grove As I slowly open this beer I stop. I can see it’s going to be a gusher. I let some of the excess carbonation free before fully opening it. Oerbier poured with a dark cola looking body. Ruby highlights when held to the light. Strong bursts of carbonation rise through the highlights. Beige head formed on the pour that quickly faded to a ring around the glass. Unique aromas coming from the depths of this brew. Dark sticky aromas. Rum soaked raisins, figs, dates and brown sugar. Toasted maltiness along with a moderate alcohol spiciness. Toasted maltiness starts things off. This beer gets much better as it warms. Actually tastes like candi sugar was added to raise the alcohol. Same flavors as in the aroma but melded together to the point where it’s difficult to pick one from the next. Actually finishes with a mild leafy hop bitterness. High carbonation makes this beer super airy and creamy when it hits the palate. Body is on the lighter side of medium. This is a solidly drinkable beer. One bottle is good for now but that’s mostly because of the style. Very enjoyable. Another solid brew from De Dolle. Very unique and interesting. I can’t recall too many BSDAs using candi sugar but maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention. 7/2/07

I really enjoyed this one. Sweeter and more of a acidic sourness, than a roasted character. Dark "cola-like" color, with some sllspice/cinnamon flavors at the end. Very pleasant, and easy to drink. I had to try two to describe my interpetations of this beauty. Strange that the brewers say this is 7.5%, when the lable clearly states 9%??

Bottle at RFD’s in Washington D.C. Delicious Strong Ale. Big off white head. Brunette in color. A warming ale with a definate alcohol presence and flavor of sweet dark fruits. Sweet, malty and delicious. Finishes very smooth with a bit of a tart, spicy note. Balanced and beautiful. My full rec.

Light alcoholic warmth from the aroma. Very spicy smelling. Some cinnamon or allspice qualities to it. Moderate mouth feel. Light sour twinge in the upfront flavor with caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, nuts, port, everything! Color is cloudy brown with a lightly tan head.
