Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Huge head on this one. Fruity aromas. Very sweet taste, with a slight alcohol burn on the palate. There’s a taste or two in there that I just can’t put my finger on, but it’s not bad. Worth trying.

A stunning deep rich brown with a wonderful thick white head. Dark caramel malts swirl in the nostrils lingering roasted fruity malt aromas. A rich full roasted malt taste with layers of chocolate, dates, figs mollases and sweet sticky caramel malt. This beer is delicious with warming vinious fruits ripening on the tongue. Sweet but tart with a rich plummy body. A wonderfully rich beer which sadly i ccannot enjoy regularly as it is not stocked in Scotland.

Pours a deep maroon with a big, fluffy white head. Mild aromas, smells of dark malts and dark fruits, a little sweet smelling. Pretty big flavor in the taste though. Dark fruits, molasses, caramel, and Belgian candy sugar make up the tastes. Really sharp. The aftertaste is slightly sweet with a nice full, rich palate. Really good beer.

Deep brown with an enormous, long-lasting head. The aroma was spicy with some fruit. Flavour was of red fruit, cinnamon with plenty of tartness. Alcohol was warming without being overpowering. An excellent beer.

Murky firey bronze pour. A lively pinot noir leads the aroma, soaking slowly into a nutty cinnamon toast. Somewhat typical. Tastes of smoked maple syrup and nutmeg sweetbread flow simply into a bittersweet red bell pepper finish. Quite spicy all in all, but maintaining a refined cocoa and brandy sweetness. Malty. Punches of thick candy and general vinousness in the mouth. Complex; simply appreciated.

I may have to go against the grain on this one. Pours with an overcarbonated head which makes me a bit leary (oh damn, did I get a bad one?). All my patience is eventually shown an unusual mix of aromas. Unpleasant cidery aromas mixed with light golding hops and strong pinot noir presence. Don’t quite know what to make of this even having read what I should expect. Nice ruby look to the beer, but the first sip leaves me confused. Typical old-world Belgian strong, but with accents of slight acidity and tannins most likely from the wood aging. High carbonation, a bit too much so, but on par with the style. Soon after, a slightly sour character mixed with red wine and just a hint of the specialty malts used. However, the red wine flavour overpowers all and leaves this ale unbalanced and flawed in my opinion. My overall impression is that the bottle I had was mostly to the brewers intent. However, as the recipe is concerned could be better formulated by toning down on the strong wine character and allowing the delicate nature of the malts and hops do most of the talking. An artisan beer from and artisan brewery, but certainly not their best offering.

I dont know why this is the first time I have tried this. I loved the 2002 reserva I tried several months ago. Very Puffy, meringue-like white head. a dark crimison body. Nose is cherries, yeast, sweet malts, and a little tart fruit. Smooth body and flavor with plums, cherries, yeast, just the right amount of sourness, and a warm finish like that of an nice red wine. This beer is so well put together and incredibly smooth, yet very powerful at the same time. I could easily drink 3 more of these right now.
