Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Bottle from Larry Pitonka. 2005. Aroma: Serious maltiness with a good amount of sweetness. Brown sugar, yeast, bread. Lots of fruit. Plums and apples, green and red grapes. A light sourness, that strengthens as it warms. Appearance: Dark brown in color with small reddish highlights. Beige head was full and creamy with good retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Malt hits first with a big sweetness and notes of toasted nuts, caramel, and bread dough. Some definite candi sugar coming through. Light tobacco smoke. Even more fruit than in the nose. Citrus, apples, grapes and raisins, prunes. Sourness plays throughout. Alcohol is noticeable and reminds me a bit of brandy. Dry finish. Palate: Medium-high bodied. Medium-high carbonation. Some alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: Another solid beer from De Dolle. Complex and very approachable at the same time.

Enjoyed in a bottle at Taco Mac in Suwanee GA. Hoppy taste...very enjoyable on a warm day in GA. Nice golden color, three finger head when poured into a Tulip glass. Would have enjoyed a second if there weren’t 300 other beers to choose from.

Had on tap at brick store pub. Pours a dark bronw with reddish hints and a thin light brown head. Aroma was of dark fruits and some yeastiness. Flavor was very smooth and a little creamy. The alcohol was not noticable but maybe a hint of metal to this but still very good.

Purchased at Regional Wine & Spirits in Wellington (NZ) off all places. (& on a side note they had more Cantillon than I’ve ever seen in Australia). Massive, massive fizzy head, actually so energetic that it was tough to control the poor. Dark amber / chocolate in colour. Sour, salty nose, not unlike a recently consumed Rodenbach Classic. Not at all unpleasant but not typical of the genre. Not disimilar to taste although the textbook comes more into play as the flavours are quite clearly underpinned with a heavy candied and dirty malt component. The salt (& olive) flavours drive a long finish. ABV heat kicks in late and makes a lasting impression.

Nice, dark amber and a huge head. The aroma is sweet and spicy and the mouthfeel is smooth and pleasant. The flavour is sweet and round, even I the alcohol is present. It has notes of ripe fruits, citrus, nuts, a hint of smoke and malt. The bitterness is moderate and the finish is long. This is a very nice beer, and my first from De Dolle Brewers.

Lots and llots of foam in this botte, that took ages to recede. Milk chocolate head. A sourness dominates this, which didn’t really appeal to me. YEast layer on the tongue. Sorry, but I’ll have to retry this later!
