Commercial Description:
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Bottle (from Bitter virtue). Gusher. Liquorice and tart fruits. Spicy yeast. But not too off considering the gushines to start.

Deep, dark reddish-purple-amber color. 1" thick and coarse bubbly head that eventually settles into a layer of tiny bubbles. Aroma of fresh green apples, sugar/caramel, spices, dried fruits (sour cherries, raisins). Very acidic, vinous and fruity flavors balanced well by malts, some citrus, apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries. Some woodiness or smokiness. An interesting brew, sort of a novelty for me... not something I’d go back to regularly... but definitely pretty great.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Big off white head and lively carbonation. The aroma of this beer reminds me alot of a westmalle dubbel, sweet dark malts, earthy yeast. Taste reminds me of the same up front but then slowly changes to a dry, tart fruit. Pretty complex and all over the place throughout the palate, a very unique and well made belgian.

(33 cl bottle at The Rover, Gothenburg, Sweden) Shady dark brown color, huge and lasting tan head. Head is mostly bubbles, but creamy on top. Very fresh estry scent, no hints of the high alcohol level. Strong Belgian ale turning a bit vineous taste, a bit sour with low bitterness. Medium mouthfeel.

tasted at Det Skæve Hjørne... Nice little one.. Carbonation and sweetness are well balanced. Dry and with a bit of sweetness. Almost like a fine port...

[sampled from DarkMagus’ bottle] Pours a reddish, coca-cola color; with a solid tan head. Aroma is excellent, sweet apples, and some woody complexity. Flavors are tart, vinous and musty. Underneath the sour, caramel malty sweetness comes through. Finishes with some hop bitterness and wood.

I tried this beer on a whim because I saw it at my local liquor store and never had it before. At $3.00 a bottle this beer is a great value! Definitely forward with cherries, quite sour, but very palatable. It’s got a very strong cherry lambic character to it. To me it’s not quite as good as Three Philosophers from Ommegang (a cherry lambic/quad blend) but it’s in the same vein. Like I said, it’s a great value! check it out!
