Commercial Description:
It is copper, with a toffee-malt taste. A subtle fruitiness, relatively firm body, and alcohol give it almost the impression of a strong ale spiked with apple brandy.

Note: No longer made (since 1999 or so) by De Dolle. Current versions are made by Strubbe (the brown ale, reportedly the same as Ichtegem's) and Bavik (the blonde, reportedly the Petrus Triple).

Bottle from 1989 - Deep beautiful body with a creamy off white head; Very, very unpleasant nose, wet cardboard, old wet dishcloth; Soft unpleasant texture, small amount of sharp carbonation, slightly bitter; Quite dry finish, very oxidized, slightly bitter incredibly unpleasant. Of cause way over the top.

Clear-amber, foxy; amberish tinted small head. Very oxydized nose, nutty, biscuit, chocolate truffles, meaty, chocolate powder. Slightly woody impression in the taste, with again dry chocolate powder, with very little sweetness - biscuit is still there. Medium bodied, not very full. Somehow, however oxydized this may be, I’m glad I still found the DDB version at ’t Kroegske, Emelgem. A perfect setting for retasting this icon.

1992 vintage Orange-brown. Alcoholic aroma with notes of syrup and amine. A bit thin. Sourish flavor with notes of cloudberries, butterscotch, cellar, berries and alcohol.

(Bottle 33 cl) Rather pale golden, creamy head. Vinous and fruity yes, but definitely also very bitter. Interesting brew. Had this at Kulminator in Antwerp. 110893

Bottle - 1992 Vintage @ Akkurat
Roast, whiskey and almond notes. Hazy amber, low head. I get an impression of rye, some dust and salt. Even at that age a bit too edgy.

A clear amber beer with no head. The aroma is sweet with notes of alcohol and peach. The flavor is as if it is a bit old - sweet, dusty, caramel, alcohol, peach, and fruit.

Vintage 1992.
Had this rare found at Akkurat in Stockholm. Pours clear cognac colored with a fizzy fast disappearing white head. Aroma is extreme acidic, so much it makes my eyes water!! Very vinous and fruity with apple and citrus notes and hint of De Dolle yeast. Flavor is also tart and acidic but more vinous than sour. Citrus, herbs and yeast notes. Strong, sharp and so warming I can feel it flowing down my throat. Shows some age, but still it matured very well. A very interesting and different experience!!

Sampled in Alveringem. 1992 Vintage. Color of old gold with still good livelyness in the beer and with a medium head. Tipical De Dolle aroma’s with touch of citrus, caramel, honeyed malts, buttercakes and some medicinale aroma’s which is normal for an old beer of this type. It has a soft taste with a round mouthfeel. In the taste you can notice some hints of stonefruits, some maltyness, hints of butter toffee’s and a fine vegetal bitterness with again a medicial touch in the afthertaste.
