jbrus (4117), Delft, Netherlands Aug 23, 2004 Wow! Very strong aroma, fruity, light spicy, some pepper, complex. Copper color, small beige head, fair lace. Very sweet, medium bitter, very very fruity, apple, pear, apricot, hint of pepper. Very warming, sticky and full.
DewBrewer (247), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 28, 2008 33cL bottle bought in the Netherlands. Not much of a head and fairly flat. Definite alcohol presence with sherry flavors. Delicious. ChainGangGuy (1524), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Aug 19, 2008 Appearance: Pours an ever so slightly hazy, dark amber body with a small, white head.
Smell: Aromatic nose smelling of sweet, candyish malts, genever, spice cake, rose hips, and liquor-soaked fruits.
Taste: Sweet, sweet maltiness tasting of caramel-coated candy corn. Dash of spices. Big mouthful of pound cake with peach schnapps and triple sec drizzled over the top washed down with herbal tea. Hit of gin, too. Fig based fruitiness throughout. Warming, spicy-sweet finish
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A bit pricey, a bit unusual, but it still makes for an excellent, late-night sipper -- even in the dead of an August in Atlanta. Petrucci914 (337), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 16, 2008 Thanks, TheCheeseMan!
2005 Bottle!
Pours a light amber color with a medium soapy head. Aroma is dark fruit, brown sugar, toffee, and hops, citrus, and alcohol. A very balanced Barley Wine for such high an alcohol. One of the best Barley Wines I’ve ever had. Juelze (676), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Aug 16, 2008 Pours an amber color with a medium soapy head. Aroma is caramel, malt, brown sugar, light fruit, melon and cherry. Taste is the same with out having any peculiar flavor messing up this gem. Perfectly balanced and no real conflict of interest flavor-wise, this is truly a great BW. merlin48 (346), Henderson, Kentucky, USA Jun 25, 2008 2005 vintage served slightly chilled into a snifter produces a hazy amber body with a scanty beige that quickly disappears with only a few flecks of lace. Lovely aroma of florals, honey, vague spices, melon, and booze. Thick and coating on the palate with subdued carbonation and an alcohol bite. Taste is floral hop bitterness, caramel, and a melon fruitiness. Exotic spices lurk underneath. Burning alcohol surges to the forefront as it warms and proves to be a major distraction. Finishes hot and peppery. Might be an apt cold weather sipper.
