This was a tasty stout. Nice and roasty & smokey, but surprisingly light on the palate, and that was good. talon1117 (612), Bellvue, Colorado, USA Oct 18, 2009 Bottled 10-08, bottle 202. What a gusher; weird from an IS. Pour is a nearly black with a massive, dark beige, rocky, fluffy head which does finally settle to a pillowy layer but minimal lace. Nose is nice but not exceptional; notes of cocoa, nice roast, some earthy wood, light smoke, dark chocolate, and faint anise. The flavor starts fairly nice with charred wood, earthy hops, semisweet chocolate, hints of anise and smoke, more cocoa, and faint notes of currant. Palate is very average with only a medium body, lively carbonation, and a velvety feel. Finishes somewhat short and metallic which really take away from the beer; other notes of semisweet chocolate, light anise, and some light charred wood. Some very nice flavors and some complexity but there were some things that were very average, i.e. the appearance, the palate, and the metallic finish. Despite the metallic notes, it is a very drinkable beer and the ABV is almost undetectable. Not a bad beer but for the price, it is nothing compared to some nicer IS’s. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 15, 2009 750ml, caged and corked bottle. Brewed 17 January 2008, bottled 21 Feb 2008, and bottle # 364 of 696. Poured a deep and dark amber tinged brownish color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of roastiness, cocoa, some woodiness, a little smoke, and a little earthy. Tastes of cocoa, roast, lighter earthiness, licorice, and very light coffee. Thin body with the alcohol content hidden. GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 13, 2009 2008 bottle #461 poured into a tulip.
Pours a dark brown out of the glass and sits a bit lighter than I would expect in a stout of this size, showing a deep copper when held up to light.
The aroma is pretty good, with lots of dark roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate and some coffee. There are hints of lactose and oats as well.
The taste is slightly different with a fruit character that I didn’t get in the aroma. It has a slightly metallic-like aftertaste that’s not too pleasant. The chocolate becomes much more powdery with a deeply roasted malt backbone.
The mouthfeel is light bodied, almost thin and watery, with good carbonation and is extremely dry in the finish.
As an export stout, this one is decent, but it doesn’t really hold up to the majority of impy stouts out there at the same ABV. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Oct 1, 2009 Bottle shared by Kevin. May Satan bless you, O Dark One. Pours a deep, dark cola black with mahogany highlights and a nice beige head. Nose features powdered plastic chocolate cocoa, nutty roasted malt, and malt butter. Flavor is chocolate red powder, and plastic roasted malt with a coffee finish. Average mouthfeel that fails to capture the obvious complexity of the beer. Not bad, but too powdery and plastic. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 30, 2009 750 ml bottle - #530, bottled 2/21/08; super thin, clear light brown with trace tan head; candy malt, fresh toffee and alcohol; kind of harsh at first sip; texture is watery with thin flavors or oat, grain and light roast; kind of sweet in the finish with a slight twang; very little roast to be found; another head scratcher from de molen thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 12, 2009 This 2007 bottled brew #336 from a bottle shop poured a head of fine to medium sized tan colored bubbles that were and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation dark brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was roasted malt and dark malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and strongly tingly at the finish. The mild flavor contained notes of roasted malt and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
