Bottle from De Bierkoning.

It’s a very nice coffee stout, but a bit disappointing considering the brewer. I’m used to such profound richness with De Molen’s dark beers, and this particular one just isn’t quite there. Appearance is great with a dark tan head that lasts for hours. Aroma doesn’t have much potency or distinction for me at this time. Flavor is quite complex, mostly dominated by coffee. The malts don’t melt and coat your mouth like other De Molen stouts. Still a very nice beer.

From the Bottle at RBESG Harlequin, Sheffield 19/07/2009 Big coffee aroma. Large beige head. Black a little sweet on the palate and hoppy with a little dryness and bitterness in a crisp coffee flavoured finish.

Bottle@Home. Aroma of pure mocca coffee. Opaque colour, large brown head, good lace. Sweet, light bitter, coffee, mocca. Medium body. Well brewed, balanced but I’m not a big fan of mocca.

[9/11/08] Draught at Arendsnest in Amsterdam. Really dark brown to black-colored with a big brown head. Aroma of tons of burnt coffee. Flavor of roasted coffee, chocolate pralines and some fruitiness. Medium to full body.

Draft at De Wildeman. Pours just about pitch black with a thick, frothy, mocha colored head that lasts. Dense, foamy sheeting clings hard to the glass, coating it entirely. In short, it’s a beautiful looking beer. The aroma is unexpectedly bretty, showing almost like an imperialized Madrugada Obscura with coffee added. Notes of bittersweet, dry cocoa and mocha are prominent and inviting. Flavors run the same course, big on dark, bittersweet cocoa, mocha, lactose, and oak, all with an earthy, bretty funk overtone. The palate is thin for the style, but creamy and easy drinking. Really tasty stuff. I’m not sure the brettiness is intentional or not, but it worked for me.
