zathrus13 (1089), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Jun 13, 2008 Bottle 414. Pours dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, and fruit. Flavor is sweet roasted malt, caramel, chcoclate. Sweetness is a bit too much. Not exactly to style, to me.
hotstuff (3045), Indiana, USA Oct 2, 2008 Corked, caged and waxed bottle that was brewed on 12/14/07 and bottled on 2/1/08. This rating took place at patrick767’s Fort Wayne Locals tasting. Small beige head with good retention, no visible carbonation, opaque, fair amount of lacing, and a dark brown hue. The aroma was roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, some alcohol, and hops. The flavor was alcohol, malt, chocolate, mildly hoppy, and finishes somewhat dry. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied. Somewhat lacking in the flavor given the style IMO; however, worthy of a try. MI2CA (1091), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Sep 29, 2008 Sample at J Gumbos Aug 2008 Indy tasting - 07/08 version - Aroma is vanilla and roasted chocolate malts with some brown sugar. Flavor is sweet, dry chocolate, vanilla and a touch of fruit. Palate is very clean and thin for an imperial stout. Alcohol is well hidden. Tasty but maybe a little too thin and sweet. patrick767 (1449), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 25, 2008 bottle at Ft Wayne locals tasting - Pours very dark brown with a big light tan head. The aroma is very light for the style with some roast malt and maybe some fruit in there. The chocolate roast malt flavor is moderately hopped. This brew is medium bodied and very drinkable. I wouldn’t have guessed the ABV is that high. It’s interesting, but give me a big, bold imperial stout or baltic porter instead. Ibrew2or3 (1757), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Sep 24, 2008 Courtesy of after4ever. Pours deep dark amber with thin mocha head. The aroma is musty dark fruity esters and black licorice. Soon, after a bit of warming perhaps, a velvety dark chocolate note rises up mingling with a faint earthy – tobacco – smoke note. The taste is smooth and near silky. It starts with a mixture of chocolate, prunes, dates, plums, more chocolate and nuttiness. By midway the sweetness grows as a velvety dark chocolate note joins in and carries to the finish. As the finish approaches the earthiness tobacco smoke wells up just to the surface bringing the experience to a close. YUM!! saxo (2305), Højbjerg, Aarhus, Denmark Sep 22, 2008 Bottle. Small head with short duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are roast malt, chocolate, coffee and oak. Wonderful licorice finish.
