Pours a very dark brown body with just a few large bubbles clinging to the outside of the glass. The nose is roasty and smokey with lots of burnt malt and a hint of alcohol. A little bit of hoppiness as well. The flavor is heavy roast with some smoke and soy oxidation notes. A little bit of alcohol, but not much for an 11% beer. Chocolate, cocoa, maybe even a bit of leather. A lot going on here. Mouthfeel is perfect for me, very minimal carbonation gives it a great viscous oily smooth texture. Overall, very nice, just my kind of beer. A little bit of an odd ball for a Baltic, not quite as much on the licorice that I like, but I give it credit for being a little unique. Aroma of earth, roast, dry grains, tobacco, bittersweet cocoa, nuts, graham cracker, subtle alcohol. Huge dark chocolate in the flavor with the same notes from the aroma. Rich. Intense. Full body, smooth. Excellent. TheCheeseMan (539), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 20, 2008 Courtesy SoLan. Pours a nearly totally black color. Aroma is odd. Very nutty and chocolatey. A great roasted note comes through nicely. The flavor is much more intense than I anticipated, with a huge roasted bitterness on the finish. Vwry nice. Hunsell (400), Amsterdam, Netherlands
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Apr 20, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown beer with almost no head. Sweet aroma of dried fruits, choclate, coffee and lots of roasted malts. Pretty sweet taste, dark caramel, followed by an intense bitterness, both from roasted malts as from hop. Virtually not carbonated, which is a pity, otherwise it would have been really great. Now it is just a great beer. profwonka (1), Traverse City, Michigan, USA does not count | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Apr 15, 2008 Had this with dinner tonight, at the brewery.
At first, I was disappointed they had no TIK, Tien, or Rasputin. But WOW!
Its got a LOT of everything. Complex, deep, rich, perfect head and smells like a beer should.
I would have bought a case, but they were sold out. Competes with the best Belgian Beers in my fridge (West Vlet 12, St. Bernardus ABT, Rochefort 10.)
