Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Bottle from Bier Tempel. Full body, orange, peaches, some yeast (in a pleasant way). Very fruity. Sweet, but not sticky.

Draft at the Blind Tiger. Blond pour with a white head. Aroma of some lemon rind, earthy malt, and yeastiness. The flavor is actually a little bland. I can’t believe I am saying this, but it should have been more sour. The earthy malt was barely tart, and that was pretty much the only thing providing any flavor in this one. Reminded me of a czech lager.

8.5%?? Surely a typo. Second of two corked and tissue-wrapped 750ml bottles. Had to wrestle with this one on the kitchen floor a bit to get the cork out. Deceptively lagery amber pour billowing with dense rocky foam. Spirals of champagne spritz. Nose of spontaneous dank fizzing sherbet, brie rind, cut lemon, vinegar-sprinkled barrelwood and horseblanket. Saliva-making, fresh and acidic. More of the same in the mouth. Lemony, spritzy, citric and prickling with pithy citrussy hop. (Try saying that after a couple of tulips). Possibly something spiky, grapefruity and N.American like Galena. Less aggressively bitter than on previous showings, but still a beautifully hopped and conditioned strong ale with zesty lambic leanings.

Bottle. Aroma of citrus and bitter hop backed by earthy spice notes. Hazy peach color with a decent white head. Medium body with creamy carbonation. The flavor is a bit woody/funky with caramel, spice and hop bitter. Heat arrives quickly. The finish is quite dry, almost astringent, and some medicinal wood and bitter hop are present. Very interesting; very tasty.

Tap at Pizzeria Paradiso. Blonde pour is thick in body. Aroma is lightly pungent with a lot of interplay; apple, pear, garlic, banana. A shade of cattiness fouling it underneath, but to a weirdly interesting effect. Flavor is quite slick and imposing, but it retains a tight balance in clove, dry grass and champagne qualities. Big sprucy bitterness in wet juniper tones. It seems to want to strike a wild pose but sort of restrains itself on that edge. Almost a heavy palate, though still with plenty of sparkle. Cool, unique stuff.
