Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

in the bottle at beertopia shelton brothers sample night. pours a rich gold with a thin white head. there’s a touch of ethanol to the nose, but definitely a hefe-like yeasty aroma. a smoothly malty beer but still seems very light. has a great mouth with a really good pepper bite to the tongue, perhaps due to the alcohol heat. A pleasant citrus backwash of grapefuit completes the flavor.

Draft. Aroma: Light malt sweetness, floral and spicy, green grapes, light dusty funk, lemon, some earthy hops. Appearance: Medium gold in color and slightly hazed. White head was full and creamy with great retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Bready malt, belgian yeast, spice and floral, lemon and apples, Dry dusty funk. Some earthy hop notes meld into a balancing bitterness. Dry finish. Palate: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Light alcohol warmth in back of mouth. Overall: Interesting but good. Some nice hop characteristics.

Very good. Sort of a cross between a golden tripel and a Belgian dark ale. Lots of good hop flavor and yeast but also green apple malt.

Bottle Cafe Le Paix, Poperinge, Belgium 27-06-07. This was described as a dryish and audaciously hoppy pale ale, which was pretty good although nowhere near as hoppy as stablemate XX Bitter. Still good hops on nose and some yeast with hops coming through in the mouth as well. A tidy bitterness that seemed to kick in again 10-20 seconds after the first hoppy flurry, this was one of the main interesting charactersitics of this beer. A very nice beer indeed.

Tap at Toronado. Pours with a hazy copper color. Aromas are quite tart with apple and some yeast, kind of like apple pie. Flavors again more on the tart side, more apple, a bit of yeast and dough. Quite a robust body with alcohol only lingering in the background. Very nice.

Appears a hazy, medium toned gold with a fluffy, white, 2 finger head of foam that fades to a gentle cap. Scattered lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of mildly tart apple, fresh grain, subtle oak, vanilla, fresh dough, lemongrass, and citrus. Taste is of the aromas with notes of apple pie and a touch of pair. Mouthfeel is ligt-medium bodied with a light sweetness up front and hints of tartness and bitters rounding it out. There is a light grassiness detected but it is subtle and hardly detracts from the overall enjoyability.
