Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

11.2oz, notched at best before March AND July 2009, I guess it doesn’t really matter which it was. Pours a cloudy red orange with a one finger light yellowish white head. Aroma has some spicy citrusy Belgian hops, yeast, and a slight artificial orange stale candy that some Belgian styles have--which I don’t like at all--though this is pretty faint. A little dusty with a slight alcohol presence. The taste has that orangey taste a little stronger which does distract a little bit from the rest of the beer. This is a fairly hoppy brew, though bitterness never gets too high, most likely balanced from the fake orangey sweetness. Dry finish, slightly warming and alcoholic. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Pretty good, despite the crappy "fake orange"--I don’t really know how else to describe it.

The color of liquid honey (well, honey is sorta liquidly already, but you know what I mean). Spicy aroma with an appley citrus-ness to it. Clovey taste with more citrus packed in there. Very dry aftertaste, to the point where I need a more refreshing beer to chase this one with.

Bottle, 8.5%. Refreshing acidic aroma. Cloudy golden colour, small white head. The flavour is a bit rough, but pleasantly so. Fruity and yeasty. Typically Belgian. Dry finish.

A very musty looking dark golden lemony yellow with a firm fuzzy froth of medium stature thats a nice powdery white. Resides to a nice skim and fluffy collaring. Lacing is fast and drippy with only a minimal amount sticking in a few spots and strings. Aroma is partially dry with a grassy herbalness of hops and yeast and soft underlay of dull lemon candy. Taste is fairly smooth and favors a somewhat softer approach in its strength as its pretty mellow in mood as it sifts across the palate with a middling lemony grassyness, a small herbal spice, and a lofted, yet rounded bready yeasty dryness. Sweetness of slight candied sugars tend to keep some nice centering flavors. Feel is pretty full in the front, not quite as malty as I would like, but the yeast and carbonation is firm and lively with a somewhat smooth sweetness. The dryness from yeast and hops is fairly evident and really stretches the palate out with flour/herbal touches. A nice drinkin’ Triple. Its not quite as bold in the flavor and complexity department, but its nice enough to enjoy.

Gold blond coloured, with a light hazy touch and a small white head. Sweet hoppy aroma, with a little peppery touch. Full palate, light bitter finish, somewhat more dry hoppy near the end. very good one.
