Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Unfiltered beer from Belgium. I bought a 75cl bootle in "Bieres Cultes" in Paris. Let’s talk about the beer : White head, small particules in the body. Very hoppy and malty. A long duration (very long.. :)

Bottle: Deep hazy brownish golden with a dense well retained off white head. Fruity yeasty aroma- complex with some honeyish Belgian biscuit malt, prunes, and caramel covered pears. Creamy fluffy body. Has a Belgian biscuit malt character offering a honey note with very soft vanilla and plummy sweetness- pear notes are there with softly spicy phenols and late peppery hop moderate bitterness. Rounded, textured, yet mildly oxidized (must’ve been on the store shelf for a while). A well made and spicy Belgian Strong.

Time to catch up before BCTC. Opaque yeasty yellow with ring and lace. Yeasty estery banana aroma. Fruity grapefruit melon bittersweetness. Yeasty hoppy bitter finish. Excellent.

July 2008: Guldenberg Belgian Abbeybier is very fragrant smells stong. It has lots of fruit and yeast in its aroma. The flavor seems to be somewhat corked/oxidized, but it is still pretty good. I get some dry fruity malt and cotton candy subtleties. This beer is strong, but doesn’t taste alcoholic. It has a meduim body, a cloudy golden-peach color, and a large foamy white head. It looks to be highly carbonated, but is is actually sweet and slightly sticky on the palate.

750 mL corked and caged bottle (Alc. 8.5% Vol.) shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #387 for this beer.

This pours a good blonde color with a huge white head. Aroma was nice with some nuttiness and some honey. Flavor was pretty well balanced, a little on the sweet side. some nuttiness and almost a roasty malty character. Most of the hops were very muted. This seemed "darker" than it looked. It was all right.

On tap at Half Door in Hartford, CT. Pours hazy vomit yellow with soapy white head. Nose is sugar, banana, honey, pepper, yeast, and some bitterness. Flavor is similar with lingering yeasty pepper. Interesting Belgian Ale.

Shakeyfest 09. Thanks Lauri! 5ish year old bottle. Kinda of like a dubbel but lighter, and spicier. Too sweet, kinda odd. Malt/light candy sweetness combo

A light haze through this yellow-with-a-hint-of-orange Belgian ale. A nice orange and spices hop character dominates the nose with underlying biscuitty, caramel malts. It has a lemony freshness in there too and light golden straw notes. In the mouth it is big and well hopped. It has a fantastic almost savoury biscuit quality with a lightly salted finish. The hops are very apparent in belches :D Hugely drinkable, but definitely not lacking body at all. Interesting.
