Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Pours a clear golden with nice white head and lacings. Sweet and slightly sour. Very much like Guldenberg, just fresher. Very similar, but better.

Pours a clear golden with nice white head and lacings. Nice and mild sweetness. Slightly spiced. Dry finish. hides alcohol very well. Quite trippelish. Good and very easygoing.

Bottle sampled with Beerded_one. Blue and white paper wrapper, peeled that off capped with a cork inside. Pop the cork and it starts to smoke, we pass it around sniffing the smoke and the head starts to rise passed the top, don’t be alarmed i saved it from hitting the ground. The pour is amazing orange\copper body underneath a large quickly rising off-white head with good retention. The aroma is heavenly, citrus, hops, belgian spices, sweetness, and fruit. The flavor is slightly hoppy, sweet, loads of citrus, slight fruit, smooth, and well balanced. Good healthy body, great brew.

Bottle, 33cl. A very discreet label for a very good beer. Hazy orange topped by a medium off-white head. Some residue in the end. Aroma isn’t very intense: some notes of fruits, specially of orange and litchis. Flavour is great, strong and not as sweet as others belgian strong ales. Spicy and yeasty, this beer is really pleasant, with the dry finish and small bitterness giving it the right balance. Lovely beer!

Bottled, this poured deep golden with a bright white head. I found the aroma to be musty and pungent. The first tastes were yeasty and earthy with a glint of honey and a slight hoppy bitterness in the finish. For some reason I anticipated a tartness that never came to fruition, but this was enjoyable enough.

Pours orange with a huge white head. Very yeasty and peppery nose. Strangely peaty, too, like a watered-down Islay Scotch; the peat calms down after a few minutes (I think it’s the hop aroma before it settles into a nice orange and earth smell). There’s sweetness in the background which manifests itself as a floral honey. The flavor is initially yeasty, but soon settles into a stale smokiness against a background of honey. The finish is lightly hoppy. The mouthfeel could stand to be thicker.
