Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Cork and Bottle Liquors, Baton Rouge, La. - 750 ml paper wrapped corked bottle. Dark, murky orange pour with a slightly off white clingy head that leaves sticky lacing. Aroma is different with some ripening vegetable notes, a hint of citrus. Flavor is a bit muttled. Pick up hints of nectarines, caramel, ripening vegetables. Just does not meld together well. Mouthfeel is thick enough. Slightly underwhelmed.

750ml bottle. A beer as elegant as it’s blue and white wrapped packaging. It pours a beautfiul firm white head atop a hazy, unfiltered flaxen gold. The aroma of hops is instantly discernable from the glass with fresh baked bread and white grapes following close behind. The beer is very well knit with the most refreshing bite of hops on the finish. One of my top picks from Belgium and the world.

(03.25.06) On tap at Firkin’s, Libertyville, IL. Hazy orange hued Belgium strong ale with giant white head. No discernable carbonation. Light sweet malt and wheat in the nose. Full bodied ale that starts with moderate malt sweetness with fruity/caramel flavors. Finishes with light malt fade and citrus hop flavor. No discernable hop bitterness. Malty rich-tasting, smooth, and well-balanced. No funky sourness or medicinal phenols detected. This is an excellent drinkable Belgium ale that works especially well after a meal.

Bottle. Deep gold colour with thin white head. Attractive citric hop aroma with grapefruit. Carries the alcohol well, more grapefruit and dry slightly herby hop finish. I like this. Good flavour, light in feel, yet 8.5%

Foggy orange color with a massive white head. Tart green apple aroma. Sweet malty flavor with a strange, not quite ripe fruit flavor. Carbonated as all hell which works well for this beer. Very nice.

hazy orange colour with a dense off white head. Malty and yeasty aroma with notes of some apricot fruityness and a wellbalanced alcohol note. Malty, light fruity flavor with notes of yeast, light peppery and dry finish.

Daintily, slightly light orange body...Pleasant, cellared and musty aroma - slightly spicy. The flavor is slightly fruity: peaches - again, slightly spicy and generally full-bodied. A decent beer!

Cloudy straw color with moderate lace - rather musty, almost sour/lambic-like/barnyardy aroma, but hints of background sweetness and herbal, tea-like qualities - very yeasty flavor, with mild sweetness and bready malts - herbal/grassy flavors, some lavender and other flowers - relatively complex, but mild and drinkable - a pretty nice beer.
