Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Bottle from Take One, Maastricht. Cloudy beer, golden, with a thick fluffy white head that sticks an inch out of the glass. Nose is quite sweet with some graininess. There’s some fresh grassy aroma there too. Mouth is slightly alcoholic, some floral bitterness, apple, orange, sweet biscuity tones all the way through. Quite well lasting on the palate, but still drinkable. Dry bitterness remains well.

Bottle. Pours cloudy orange with small particles, large, rocky and creamy white head, mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, hay, straw, grain), average hops (flowers, perfume, grass), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of alcohol, grape, pear, apple, cask, and coriander. Medium bodied, creamy texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Tap at OTH. Pours golden with whit ehead.Aroma is hoppy, yeasty, sweet floral hops. Taste, grainy, yeasty some candi sugar and a honey like mouthfeel. Found it to be too much on the bitetr hops side.

Bottle conditioned, 330ml. Orange amber, fairly flat. Quite a heavy beer with a whisky type malt character, strong with alcohol notes. Some vague spicing with a dry astringent hop to mid bitterness. Pretty reasonable, but just a sipper for me.

bottle, pours orange, medium white head, good lacing. Aroma is malty and citris hops. Flavors are sweet malt, orange, candy sugar, and bitter hops in the finish. Slight alcohol burn in the finish. This is good, but a little too sweet for me.

33cl bottle. Clear straw color with medium white head. Aroma is nice full spiceiness, dry, big yeast. Flavor is sweeter lemon, yeast, some alc, candy sugar, orange, hops, some bitterness, flowery, a little spice. Medium body with creaminess and a light crispiness. This is one of the better none sour beers i’ve had in Belgium
