Ernest (4254), Boulder, Colorado, USA Nov 24, 2001 Updated: May 4, 2008 750ml bottle (Jan/08 bottling).
Head is initially large, frothy, rocky, white, fully lasting.
Body is hazy dark yellow, bottle conditioned.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs, lemon), lightly yeasty (dough, cobwebs), with notes of pepper, dried pineapple, Juicy Fruit gum, lemon zest, honey, alcohol.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Ultra-fresh bottle (4-5 months since bottling), and what a terrific batch this is! Like a stronger version of XX Bitter, but with a more subdued (but virtually as complex) aroma. Very tripel-like...very dry finish despite a big malt start, assertive but well-behaved alcohol presence, and very clean. Incredible beer. Jaw-dropping. And of course, hilariously underrated, as virtually all the best beers in the world are (XX Bitter, Taras Boulba, etc.).
Defreni (519), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 12, 2008 Flaske. Orange uigennemsigtig øl. Med abdij stående udenpå flasken er det tydeligvis et forsøg på en trippel. Et vellykket forsøg I might add. Udmærket frugt i duften men en kende for sød til min smag, og selvom der står at den skal være tør, er den det desværre ikke, hvilket ellers ville have gjort det til en superøl. Men fin fin og bestemt værd at drikke. ruggedman (429), Portland, Maine, USA Oct 5, 2008 Oh yeah, this is what i’m talking about! Golden color, light head, but what a flavor this packs in. Totally surprised by this one! Stefano (1018), Esbjerg, Denmark Oct 4, 2008 Pours a somewhat hazy amber color with a thin head. Aroma is fruity, malty and surprisingly fresh. Sweet flavour, light alcohol and citrus with a slightly warming finish.
rederic (1444), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 3, 2008 Cloudy honey gold hue, with a white head, yeasty, fruity, grainy pale malt nose with some honeyish, mild citrusy accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, bready dough character, with some honeyed pale malts, a bit grainy also, with a flowery hop citrusy note and some grapefruit, lemony accents, leading towards a fruity, warmth, hop bittering finish. NoiZe (947), Zeist, Netherlands Oct 2, 2008 Orange, amber colored brew. Fruity, sweet aroma, some spices. Flavor is sweet, balanced fruity flavor and malts. Very nice hopbitterness in the end. Nice flavor, especially the bitterness! Good build up of the flavors.
